Diamondbacks 6, Giants 2: the San Francisco Sweep

The Diamondbacks came into the game with a series win secured, but followed the hot bats of Lamb, Goldschmidt, and Tomas, along with an emergency relief appearance by Tyler Wagner, to get the sweep.

Record: 9-8. Pace: 86-76. Change over last year: +1.

Maybe it's just my defeatist nature, but I turned on this afternoon's game already pretty satisfied with the series, and frankly expecting a loss. Part of it being that 4 game road sweeps aren't common for the Diamondbacks, and part of it because Shelby Miller was starting.

I want to give the guy a chance, but woof, was today another rough game. He only was able to complete 2 innings, and was pulled in the 3rd after four straight walks to allow the Giants first run. Miller gave up 5 walks in his brief outing, and Chip Hale had to make an emergency call for Tyler Wagner.

Wagner induced a double play that scored another run, but was able to lock down for a total of 5 innings to give the Diamondbacks a chance in the game.

Luckily the Diamondbacks offense was largely ready to respond to the reliever's operatic performance. The D-backs were already up 2 runs before Miller's walkabout, after Segura scored via a Goldy double in the 1st and Lamb scored on a Goldy single in the 3rd. Tomas gave Arizona the lead for good with a solo shot in the 4th.

The D-backs then really broke the game out in the 9th, scoring 3 runs that featured steals, errors, and a triple by Segura. Evan Marshall came into to clean things up, and sealed the series sweep with two ground balls.

The Diamondbacks head home for hopefully a winning series against the Pirates. Home hasn't been too welcoming for the team; maybe that's why they're whinging for a new ballpark. First pitch is at 6:40pm Arizona Time, so be there or be L7.
