Sale Catches the Wind
The AZ Snakepit's Day Three Open Thread was very active with over 200 comments. I tip my hat to Sprankton for his comment of the day, "New coaches, clean slate. I'm excited to see how it plays out."
Here's What Happened:
Trade: Red Sox received Tyler Thornburg, relief pitcher. Brewers received Travis Shaw, 3B, Maurico Dubon, minors SS, Josh Pennington, minors RHP, and PTBNL. Tyler Thornburg (FA in 2020) will replace free agent losses. Travis Shaw (FA in 2022) will push Jonathon Villar to 2B, who will push Scooter Gennett to a bench role. With the loss of Shaw, the Red Sox may plan on Kung Fu Panda (Pablo Sandoval) playing third base.
Trade: Red Sox received Chris Sale, starting pitcher extraordinary, five time all-star, age 27 with three years control. White Sox received four prospects: Yoan Moncada (top prospect in baseball), Michael Kopech (100 mph fastball), Luis Alexander Basabe, and Victor Diaz.
Red Sox signed Mitch Moreland to a 1 year, $5 Million contract. Although Moreland can play first base, he may be replacing DH David Ortiz who was lost to free agency.
Views of the Chris Sale Trade:
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal called the trade a coup for the White Sox, albeit a high risk one.
MLB Trade Rumors' Steve Adams said Sale was one of the most valuable trade commodities in Major League Baseball, and he commanded an according price.
Over the Monster's Ben Buchanan points out that none of the prospects traded away by the Red Sox were likely to play until late 2017, so the Red Sox's core is intact.
The Baseball Kid provided a different view saying the return for Sale was underwhelming.
The AZ Snakepit's Preston Salisbury wonders whether the Nationals, having missed out on Sale, will now pursue Greinke.

a. On players’ roles on the team: There was no impact today.
b. Stocking the farm: There was no impact today.
c. Payroll: There was no impact today, and so payroll room remains to take advantage of opportunities to improve the team.
