Dbacks MiLB Round-Up 7/25: Westbrook Making Waves

New, comments

Visalia's Jamie Westbrook is one of the organization's somewhat overlooked prospects. The 20-year-old second baseman is having a fine season in the California League and is demonstrating a fairly wide range of skills for his age. He's showing some pop (10 home runs), some speed (11 steals), some plate discipline (16% K rate). He does not appear on the Dbacks own Top 20 prospects list, but there's about 10 guys on that list I would not trade Westbrook for. I think he deserves some due and he should be watched closely going forward.

Snake Stars

1 Star: Anfernee Benitez, Missoula 5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 7 K, 1 ER, W (2-2)
0 Stars: Daniel Palka, Visalia 0 for 5, 4 K

AAA: Reno 8 Las Vegas 5. The Aces battled back and forth all game and finally broke it open with 3 runs in the 8th. Justin Marks gave up 4 runs over the first 5 innings and the bullpen was good allowing just one more run the rest of the way. Matt Stites got the win and Enrique Burgos the save with scoreless 8th and 9th innings. Nick Evans reached base 3 times and blasted his 14th home tallying 3 RBI. Danny Worth went 2 for 4 with his 5th home run and 2 RBI.

AA: Mobile 1 @ Mississippi 2. Blayne Weller pitched well allowing 2 runs early before settling down to finish with 6 full innings. he gave up just 3 hits and struck out 4. But the offense couldn't get anything done against former Dbacks prospect Andrew Barbosa who gave up just one hit and a couple of walks in his 6 shutout innings while striking out 7.

A+: Visalia 5 Modesto 6. The Rawhide lost a tough one in 11 innings when J.R. Bradley got tagged for an unearned run. Ryan Doran started and gave up 3 runs over 4 innings. The offense was led by Jamie Westbrook who went 3 for 5 and hit his 10th home run. Breland Almadova went 2 for 4 with a double and drove in 2 while Domingo Leyba had a couple of singles.

A: Kane County 2 @ Peoria 3. The Cougars seemed on the verge of eking out a close with Zac Curtis coming on in the 9th. But Curtis endured a rare blown save on 3 hits and a walk, the winner coming with 2 outs. Starter Josh Taylor was very good allowing just one run over 6 innings on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. The offense managed just 5 hits.

A-: Hillsboro 2 @ Boise 5. Tyler Bolton started out with 4 shutout innings and got a lead when the offense scored 2 in the 5th. But he came a little undone after that surrendering 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th and another in the 7th. The offense had no answer though not for lack of baserunners. Zach Nehrir and Trevor Mitsui both went 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI. Jose Queliz had 2 hits with a double and Gerard Hernandez had a pair of singles.

R: Missoula 5 Great Falls 1. Andernee Benitez had it going allowing a single run over 5+ innings on 5 hits and a walk with 7 strikeouts. The bullpen was just as good keeping the score sheet clean the rest of the way with 7 strikeouts in 3+ innings. The offense was productive with 4 players having multi-hit games including Isan Diaz, Raymel Flores, Jason Morozowski and Matt Jones. Jones had a double and a triple.
