New, comments

On the day of the Home-Run Derby in Cincinnati, Team USA beat Colombia 5-3 in the Pan Am baseball tournament, with Aaron Blair and Jake Barrett getting the win and save respectively. There were some other good pitching performances elsewhere, too, as all five teams in action won.

Pan Am Games Team USA 5, Colombia 3. Aaron Blair allowed two runs over five innings, as Team USA improved to 2-1 in preliminary pool play. He allowed three hits and two walks striking out one, but the United States had to come from behind, with Casey Kotchman's three-run homer in the sixth inning key.. Jake Barrett got a four-out save, manager Jim Tracy saying,  "The strike out that Jake Barrett got to end the eighth inning was critical and a huge point in the game. He did a terrific job."

Meanwhile, in the Triple-A Home-Run Derby, Peter O'Brien lost to Orioles' prospect Dariel Alvarez in the final. Both men advanced from the preliminaries by hitting 15 home-runs in their qualifying round - unlike their major-league counterparts, it was not head-to-head, with the two highest tallies reaching the final. Alvarez then had six home-runs in the decisive round, compared to O'Brien's five. Another Reno hitter finished third in qualifying, Jamie Romak getting a total of thirteen homers.

Double-A Mobile 5 @ Jacksonville 2. Ender Inciarte looks to be just about ready, cranking the first home-run of his rehab stint for the BayBears to lead off their game against the Suns, and added another hit later. 3B Tom Belza reached base all four times he was up, on two hits and two walks. LF Zach Borenstein also had two hits, including his 9th homer for Mobile, a two-run shot in the seventh. Braden Shipley pitched well, allowing one run on four hits and no walks over six innings, fanning four, and Silvino Bracho got his seventh save.

High-A Visalia 5, Bakersfield 4. The Rawhide were 4-0 up going into the eighth, but the Blaze tied things up off Joey Krehbiel there. However, Daniel Palka wasted no time in the ninth, hammering the first pitch of the frame for a walk-off homer, his 15th. It book-ended Mitch Haniger's HR, which opened things for Visalia in the first with his 7th for them. However, the Rawhide managed only two hits in between, scoring their other three runs on a fielding error and two wild pitches. Ryan Doran tossed 6.1 scoreless innings, on two hits and two walks, with three K's

A-ball Kane County 4, Cedar Rapids 2. Josh Taylor allowed only an unearned run over five innings, giving up four hits and two walks, with three strikeouts, but got a no-decision. The Cougars took the lead with two in the seventh, going ahead on a bases-loaded walk to SS Ildemaro Vargas, who also doubled. 3B Joe Munoz and 2B Henry Castillo each delivered two hits and drove in a run for Kane County, while RF Chuck Taylor singled, walked and stole a base as they improved to 16-3 in the second-half.

A-short Hillsboro 6, Spokane 0. Jeferson Mejia improved to 2-2 with six shutout innings, scattering four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Will Landsheft and Cameron Gann completed the seven-hitter. 3B Nate Robertson's two-run homer in the third was all the offense they would need, but RF Gerard Hernandez repeated the medicine in the fourth. 2B Fenery Ozuna and 1B Josh Anderson each picked up a pair of hits for the Hops.

Rookie Missoula vs. Idaho Falls postponed due to rain.

AZL D-backs 2, Rangers 0. Hector Hernandez and four relievers combined on a four-hit shutout: Hernandez worked the first four, with two hits, no walks and two strikeouts, before turning it over the 'pen for five shutout frames of two-hit ball. Holden Helmink and Scooter Price each fanned two of three batters faced, and Rafael Pujols got the save in the ninth. The D-backs managed only five hits, 1B Ismael Pena getting two of those; both their runs were scored by RF Francis Martinez, who had the only extra-base knock, a triple.
