Diamondbacks 1, Dodgers 3: Oh No! We Suck Again!

Because I've already used "Bad Outings and Wasted Chances" as a title...

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

A quick hit from Ender Inciarte started the game off for the Diamondbacks. However, after Jake Lamb flew out, Inciarte tried to steal second with Goldschmidt at the plate, and was thrown out. Goldschmidt then got a base hit of his own, and advanced to second on a wild pitch during Yasmany Tomas' at bat. However, Tomas struck out and the inning came to an end.

Robbie Ray pitched in and out of trouble for the first time in the first inning. Chris Heisey lead the inning and the game off for the Dodgers, and he drew a walk. Yasiel Puig hit a single and moved Heisey to second. Heisey then tagged and went to third on an Adrian "No Longer Leading The ASG Voting" Gonzalez fly out to center, putting runners on the corners with only one out. Ray would turn the Dodgers away, though, and get Howie Kendrick to ground into a double play and end the inning.

The Dbacks got another lead off single to start the second from David Peralta. He ended up doing the same thing as Inciarte before him, and getting thrown out trying to steal second. This time it was with Jarrod Saltalamacchia at the plate, and again, the batter at the plate hit a single after the caught stealing. However, Nick Ahmed hit a single to move Salty to second, and Ray sacrificed them both to second and third, respectively. Then, with out number nine hitter, Cliff Pennington, hitting, Carlos Frias uncorked another wild pitch. Salty scored and Ahmed went to third. That was unfortunately all they managed, as Pennington struck out to end the inning. 1-0 Dbacks.

The Dodgers were sat down quickly in the second, but Ray had to pitch out of trouble again in the third. Alberto Callaspo walked, and Ray hit Frias with a pitch to quickly put two on, with no one out. In the end, the old adage about lead off walks was ignored, as Heisey flew out, and Puig and Gonzalez grounded out to end the inning.

Both offenses were quiet, only managing a couple base runners between them, until the bottom of the sixth inning. To start the inning, Adrian Gonzalez flew out for the first out, but Kendrick hit a very much wind assisted home run to tie things up at one apiece. Ray quickly ended the inning, but after escaping trouble earlier in the game, fell victim to an unlucky home run, and the Dbacks' slim lead was gone.

Robbie Ray and the Diamondbacks' luck continued to run out in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Ray walked Heisey for the second time tonight. Chip Hale pulled him from the game. Don't disagree with that decision. I do, however, disagree with his decision to replace him with Addison Reed. Reed promptly loaded the bases on a double and an intentional walk to Gonzalez. Kendrick made him pay by hitting a single that scored two, including the runner left on by Ray, which put him in line for an undeserved loss. Reed was only saved from giving up more runs thanks to an amazing Peralta which probably would have gone for extra bases otherwise. Thanks to that, though, the inning was over and the score was only 3-1 Dodgers.

And there it would stay for the rest of the night. The Dbacks were sat down in order in both the eighth and ninth innings, without even a glimmer of a chance.

Tomorrow, the Diamondbacks try to avoid the sweep. Jeremy Hellickson takes the mound at 7:10 Arizona time. We shall see if he can continue his string of decent outings, and if the offense will step up enough to make it even matter. See you then!
