2015 MLB Draft: Mock round-up

With no clear #1, who are people saying the Diamondbacks might take with the first pick in this year's draft?

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

Based off the big board of mock drafts at DC Pro Sports Report, and using the drafts which have been updated since May 15, reflects the apparent lack of consensus. These nine drafts give us five different #1 picks, with no player being chosen on more than a couple of different mocks there. Here's a summary of the latest and/or best-regarded mocks, and who they have the Diamondbacks chosing with the first overall pick next month.

Baseball America - Tyler Jay, LHP, Illinois

They appear to be leaning toward the idea that the Diamondbacks will look to save money on the first overall pick, which can then be used on other choices later in the draft. "Jay has had six-inning outings, he’s had weekends with multiple appearances, and he built a strong track record last summer with USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team. He would be an unusual No. 1 overall pick, but this is an unusual draft class." Rest of the the top 5: Dansby Swanson, Brendan Rodgers, Dillon Tate, Kyle Tucker.

Jim Callis, MLB.com - Dansby Swanson, SS, Vanderbilt

"The D-backs have actively scouted mid-first-round talents who would take deep discounts, including Kennesaw Mountain High (Kennesaw, Ga.) catcher Tyler Stephenson and Niskayuna (N.Y.) High outfielder Garrett Whitley, though that might just be some misdirection to try to create extra leverage with the guy they really want. That appears to be a position player rather than a pitcher, and Arizona clearly likes Swanson more than the top-rated prospect, Lake Mary (Fla.) High shortstop Brendan Rodgers." Rest of the top 5: Rodgers, Jay, Daz Cameron, Carson Fulmer.

Matt Garrioch, Minor League Ball - Dillon Tate, RHP, UC-Santa Barbara

"The Diamondbacks seem to be focusing on arms, so passing on the consensus top player could happen. They could also take someone like Swanson, who they have been linked to as well. They have also been mentioned along with a couple prep players who may cut a deal so they can spread out their bonus money some." Rest of the top 5: Rodgets, Swanson, Jonathan Harris, Cameron.

Kiley McDaniel, Fangraphs - Dansby Swanson, SS, Vanderbilt

"It’s down to CF Garrett Whitley, C Tyler Stephenson and CF Daz Cameron with some chance RHP Dillon Tate is still in the mix and SS Dansby Swanson possibly involved. After writing that, I heard that Arizona is definitely considering those prep players, but teams don’t think they’ll pull the trigger on a way-below-slot prep option and they are leaning college, with Tate and Swanson the targets and SS Alex Bregman also getting some consideration as a long shot." McDaniel adds, "There’s also some thought...the rumors of cut-rate high school options have just been a ploy to get the price down." Tin-foil hats ahoy! Rest of the top 5: Rodgers, Tate, Kyle Funkhouser, Cameron.

Through The Fence Baseball - Dansby Swanson, SS, Vanderbilt

"Lots of names attached to this pick, none of which is the kid many believe to be the best player in this class (see below). Swanson continues to prove that shortstop is where he belongs on the field by putting together one hell of a highlight reel this season. The 6’-1" right-hander can hit, has plus speed and has shown some nice pop in his bat this spring. He may not have the highest ceiling in this draft, but his floor is one of the highest. Through 55 games, he is hitting .347/.438/.616 with 19 doubles, six triples, nine home runs and has stolen 13 bases. Carson Fulmer is also getting some recent love for the first-overall pick." Rest of the top 5: Rodgers, Fulmer, Tate, Tucker.

Draft Utopia - Brendan Rodgers, SS, Lake Mary HS

"Arizona has one big need at shortstop. Brendan Rodgers may be a complete shortstop in the making with a .397 batting average, tremendous speed, a cannon arm that allows him to fire an out at the speed of sound, along with precise fielding skills of a potential gold glove winner.  The Diamondbacks would be foolish to pass on Rodgers at this spot. This is a guy they need and the best player on my board." Rest of the top 5: Tate, Funkhouser, Swanson, Mike Nikorak.

Keith Law, ESPN [subscription needed] - Dansby Swanson, SS, Vanderbilt

Law says, "I've heard from two independent sources that they have settled on their guy, but of course won't disclose it to anyone, not even the player in question." While noting that the team have scouted a large number of players, Law think the pair on which the team appear to be devoting most attention are Swanson and Tate, with Fulmer being an alternative candidate, if Arizona decides to go the "below slot" option. Rest of the top 5: Alex Bregman, Tate, Rodgers, Tucker.

Rant Sports - Carson Fulmer, RHP, Vanderbilt

"I still believe that Brendan Rodgers is the best player in this draft, but there has been a lot of buzz surrounding the Diamondbacks being interested in RHP Carson Fulmer. I still have a little worry about his durability as a starter, but there's no questioning the talent." Rest of the top 5: Swanson, Tate, Bregman, Walker Buehler
