Let's presume we have the following players available
- C. Tuffy Gosewisch
- 1B. Paul Goldschmidt
- 2B. Aaron Hill
- SS. Chris Owings
- 3B. Jake Lamb
- LF. Ender Inciarte
- CF. A.J. Pollock
- RF. Mark Trumbo
Some of those choices are not confirmed yet, but in most cases, they probably don't make too much difference. You could swap Gerald Laird for Gosewisch, or David Peralta for Inciarte, and it likely wouldn't matter as far as batting order goes, since they're both same-handed and offer roughly comparable offensive output. The only one that would make a difference, would be replacing Owings with Nick Ahmed, who might even find himself batting behind Goseiwsch. I hope Tuffy can stand the rarefied air of hitting all the way up there at #7...
At this point, I don't see Yasmany Tomas breaking camp with the team. He certainly isn't ready to play third-base, while both Inciarte and Peralta have hit better than him this spring. Getting the easy decisions out of the way first: Gosewisch hits eighth and Goldschmidt third. Trumbo bats clean-up. Something somethiing protection. I like Pollock and Inciarte at the top of the order, so that leaves the 5-6-7 slots left to be filled with Hill, Lamb and Owings. In terms of experience, you'd go Hill, Owings, Lamb; but that gives us four consecutive righties, so I will flip Lamb and Owings. This gives me:
vs. RHP
- CF. A.J. Pollock
- LF. Ender Inciarte
- 1B. Paul Goldschmidt
- RF. Mark Trumbo
- 2B. Aaron Hill
- 3B. Jake Lamb
- SS. Chris Owings
- C. Tuffy Gosewisch
There does not appear to be much opportunity for platooning, largely because we only have three left-handed bats on the entire 40-man roster at this point: Lamb, Inciarte and Peralta. Versus a southpaw, Ross probably replaces Inciarte, and that's about it. Hill can move up to the #2 spot under those circumstances, with Ross taking over in the five-hole, and Lamb dropping down below Owings.
vs. LHP
- CF. A.J. Pollock
- 2B. Aaron Hill
- 1B. Paul Goldschmidt
- RF. Mark Trumbo
- LF. Cody Ross
- SS. Chris Owings
- 3B. Jake Lamb
- C. Tuffy Gosewisch
That's my vague, back of the envelope batting orders for your 2015 Diamondbacks. Anyone care to disagree?
