Dbacks MiLB Round-Up 9/6: Reno Advances

Cameron Spencer

Reno knocked off Las Vegas behind the pitching of Charles Brewer and advances to the PCL championship series beginning on Tuesday against Omaha. Mobile dropped the middle game of their five-game set with Jacksonville and now must face two consecutive win-or-go-home games to advance. Visalia won the first game of their five-game series against Bakersfield for the right to advance to the California League championship series. Hillsboro meanwhile won game one of the Northwest League championship series and now just needs to win one of their next two games to win the title.

Snake Stars
3 Stars: Rudy Flores, Visalia 3 for 5, 2 R, 2 HR (4), 4 RBI
2 Stars: Evan Marzilli, Mobile 3 for 4, 2 R, 1 DBL, 2 RBI, 1 SB
1 Star: Charles Brewer, Reno 6.1 IP, 6 H, 0 BB, 5 K, 3 ER, W (1-0)
0 Stars: Aaron Blair, Mobile 5 IP, 8 H, 3 BB, 4 K, 7 ER, 4 HR

AAA: Reno 7 Las Vegas 3. Charles Brewer stymied Las Vegas with 6 shutout innings before tiring in the 7th and giving up a 3-run homer that proved to be meaningless by then. The offense cranked out 6 runs in the middle innings that featured a 2-run homer by Danny Dorn. Garrett Webber and Mike Freeman each had 2 hits with a double and an RBI.

AA: Mobile 5 @ Jacksonville 7. Aaron Blair picked a bad night to have probably his worst outing of the year as he got rocked for 4 home runs and 7 runs overall in 5 innings. The offense tried to battle back but it was a bridge too far. Evan Marzilli led the offense with 3 hits including a double, 2 RBI and a stolen base. Todd Glaesmann was perfect with 2 hits and 2 walks in 4 at bats. Tom Belza had 2 hits and 2 RBI.

A+: Visalia 10 @ Bakersfield 5. The Rawhide won with this one with the long ball as they cranked out 5 home runs on the night. Rudy Flores led the way with 2 of those for 4 RBI and has 4 home runs already in this post-season. The other home runs came from Alex Glenn, Jose Queliz and George Roberts. Blayne Weller got the start and wasn't too sharp allowing 5 runs over 5.1 innings. But the bullpen stepped up with goose eggs the rest of the way to seal the win. Interestingly, Andrew Velazquez got called up and started the game at DH going 0 for 5 with 2 strikeouts.

Hillsboro 7 @ Vancouver 5. The Hops continue to steamroll through the playoffs with their third consecutive win behind the pitching of Jared Miller and long balls from Stryker Trahan and Stewart Ijames. Ben Eckles got the start and he was miserable allowing 3 runs in the 1st inning on 4 hits and a walk and was yanked in favor of Jared Miller. Miller gave up 2 more runs in the 2nd to create a 5-0 hole but he followed that with 4 shutout innings that gave the offense the chance to get back into it. And get back into it they did with 4 runs in the 3rd that featured a 2-run Ijames home run and then the game winner in the 6th by Trahan. Rob Wort put up critical shutout innings in the 7th and 8th and Zac Curtis closed it out in the 9th. Pedro Ruiz, Nate Robertson and Taylor Ratliff each chipped in with a pair of hits.
