Dbacks MiLB Round-Up 8/16: Brent Jones Showing Up

Seemingly hidden among the weeds of the Dbacks' 2014 draft is 4th rounder Brent Jones, a right handed starter out of Cornell. He started the year in Hillsboro where he didn't exactly dominate, but for his first taste of the pros did just fine with a 3.95 ERA and a .218 BAA. That earned him a promotion to South Bend where he's actually pitched better and last night threw 5 scoreless innings on 3 hits and a walk with 7 strikeouts. He's got perfect size for a pitcher at 6-3, 215 and while he doesn't look to be a strikeout machine yet or anything at first glance he's got a future. Don't sleep on him and we'll see how he continues to develop.

AAA: Reno 6 @ New Orleans 3.Mike Bolsinger did his job allowing 2 runs over 6 innings with a whopping 11 strikeouts. The offense did its job giving Bolsinger enough runs for the win  And the bullpen did its job as Kevin Munson, Will Harris and Jake Barrett finished the game off with 3 goose eggs. Nick Ahmed and Garrett Webber led the way on offense with 3 hits each including a double. Webber had 2 RBI and Ahmed had 1. Andy Marte had 2 hits including his 16th homer.

AA: Mobile 3 @ Pensacola 0. Archie Bradley started the game with 4 shutout innings but they were shaky innings as he gave up 4 hits and walked 4 needing 88 pitches. He was pulled after 4 in favor of Cody Wheeler who tacked on 2 shutout innings and stole the win from Bradley. Seth Simmons was the best pitcher of the night pitching 2 shutout innings with 5 strikeouts. Kaleb Fleck earned his 16th save. The offense only had 5 hits but it was enough as Dallas Tarleton had 2 of the 5.

A+: Visalia 2 @ Modesto 9. Blayne Weller pitched pretty good allowing 2 runs over 6 innings on 6 hits with 7 strikeouts and the game was tied 2-2 after 7 innings. But Daniel Gibson got rocked in the 8th as the Nuts scored 7 times to put the game away. The offense only had 4 hits with George Roberts going 2 for 3 with a double.

A: South Bend 5 Lansing 1. Brent Jones was superb throwing 5 shutout innings with 7 strikeouts. Andrew Velazquez had 2 hits including his 7th home run plus 2 RBI. He's slowly working himself out of the funk he was in following his on-base streak. Jamie Westbrook went 3 for 3 with an RBI and Marty Herum had 2 hits with a triple and an RBI.

A-: Hillsboro 6 @ Eugene 3. Felipe Perez is starting to get his season on track and he tossed 5 strong innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 2 walks while fanning 5. Stryker Trahan was a wrecking crew at the dish going 3 for 4 with a double, his 17th home run, an RBI and 3 runs scored. Jordan Parr also scored 3 runs and had 2 hits including his 5th home run.

R: Game 1. Missoula 3 Idaho Falls 2.Touki Toussaint had his longest outing of the year with 5 solid innings and he earned the win while allowing 2 runs on 2 solo home runs. He struck out 3. Brody Greer picked up his 9th save with a shutout 7th. Taylor Ard did the bulk of the damage with a 2-run homer in the 4th inning. Stewart Ijames had 2 hits and has his average up to .370.

R: Game 2. Missoula 2 Idaho Falls 6. The nightcap didn't go so well as Dallas Newton got hit pretty hard for 6 runs in the first 3 innings. The offense only had 4 hits with 2 by Mark Ehmcke.

AZL: Dbacks 9 Rangers 4. An all-around team effort in this one as Daniel Hudson made another rehab appearance tossing 1 inning allowing a hit and striking out 1. Merkis Montero was pretty good after Hudson pitching 5 innings allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and a walk while striking out 6. That earned him his 2nd win. Isan Diaz was the offensive star with 2 triples and 3 RBI. Tyler Clark went 3 for 4 with a double and Alvaro Rondon went 2 for 5.
