Quotables

This has been a bad year, and the first two games we lost games in two different ways, and it's certainly one where you can go out the third night and roll over, especially early on when you have a pitcher shutting you down. But that doesn't really exist on this team. It's a bunch of guys that care and are very professional. They're good with the younger guys, and you see the fight keep happening, which is really all you can ask for at this point.

- Brandon McCarthy

The first at-bat I got a strikeout; I was just thinking too much. Second at-bat I grounded out, and I was like, 'OK, I'm going to get it next time.' So next time he gave me a pitch I wanted, and I put a good swing and got a home run.

- David Peralta

The first day was devastating, I mean they came back and stole that game from us. We had our worst game of the year last night, so just to come back today and just the attitude they had the way that played a clean game, aggressive everywhere, no errors, played good behind all their pitchers.

Daily D-backs

Hitless after 5, D-backs rout Pirates | MLB.com
For the first five innings Thursday night, it certainly did not look good for the D-backs. Pirates right-hander Vance Worley was throwing a no-hitter, and Arizona was already down a couple of runs. That all changed in the span of four batters in the sixth as the D-backs rallied to take the lead before running away with a 10-2 victory to avoid a sweep at PNC Park.

Collmenter will aim to continue his solid performance against the streaking Braves on Friday in an attempt to become only the second pitcher in franchise history to win three games in 10 days. The first was Randy Johnson, who won two games as a starter and one in relief in the 2001 World Series.

David Peralta had three hits, including a two-run homer, and drove in four runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks avoided a series sweep with a 10-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night.

Miguel Montero says D-backs aren't ready to give up just yet | azcentral.com
Catcher Miguel Montero did not deny how poorly his team played on Wednesday night. The Diamondbacks looked sloppy, brain-dead, uninspired, losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a game so bad it left the impression they had come to terms with their status as one of baseball's worst teams.

In what I consider the greatest piece of the year from our talented beat writer Nick Piecoro, he asks for the area scouts' opinions on each of our 2014 draft picks.

The Blue Jays challenge a play at first base in the 2nd, and after review, the call is overturned, plating a run for them. Bob Melvin submits the game as protest but the A's win anyways, 4-1.
