SnakeBytes 7/21: Doesn't Matter, Still A Sweep

Now granted, the Cubs aren't a particularly good team, but a sweep to start off this 2nd half of the season is a great start for a team all but looking for good news this season. The Tigers come to town for the start of an interleague matchup.

I'd be remiss if I didn't say the force was with us today.

When I saw the fly ball, you never know what's going to happen, so I tagged. He just fell down over the fence. I was like, 'OK … That's perfect for us.

Daily D-backs

D-backs sweep of Cubs |
The D-backs starter pitched exceptionally in the D-backs' sweep-clinching 3-2 win against the Cubs on Sunday, which happened to be Star Wars Day at Chase Field.

Diamondbacks complete sweep of the Cubs |
Even with the playoffs out of the picture, team morale probably couldn't afford another rough start for the second half. After a 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday at Chase Field, the Diamondbacks seem to have avoided one, the victory giving Arizona its first home sweep of the season. The Diamondbacks are 3-0 after the All-Star Break for just the second time since 2002, and have gone 34-34 since May 1.

Kirk Gibson's challenge leads to vital insurance run |
D-backs manager Kirk Gibson successfully challenged a call at second base in the seventh inning of Sunday's 3-2 win over the Cubs. The overturn eventually led to a run.

12 teams to receive draft picks in Competitive Balance Lottery |
Major League Baseball's version of the Draft lottery doesn't attract nearly as much attention as its NBA and NHL counterparts, mostly because baseball's top picks aren't determined randomly like they are in the other sports. But for 12 big league clubs, the Competitive Balance Lottery will provide them with a valuable extra selection in 2015.

Ross day to day with left calf tightness |
After leaving Saturday's 9-3 win against the Cubs before the third inning with tightness in his left calf, outfielder Cody Ross said he doesn't think the injury will keep him out long.

Home cooking helping rookie David Peralta succeed |
The start to Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta's career has been nothing short of impressive, and he hasn't slowed down since the season resumed after the All-Star break. Perhaps his family, currently visiting from Venezuela, deserves some of the credit for his contributions in a sweep of the Chicago Cubs, which the Diamondbacks completed Sunday at Chase Field with a 3-2 win.

Oliver Perez says health is key to his success |
The Diamondbacks raised eyebrows when they signed OliverPerez in early March, giving the rejuvenated yet still historically inconsistent left-hander a two-year contract to pitch out of their bullpen. But more than halfway through the season, it rates as the best move Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers made all offseason.

Verlander to square off vs. Nuno in interleague opener |
The D-backs will get another look at newcomer Vidal Nuno, who will be making his third start for Arizona since being acquired him from the Yankees. After an impressive first start on July 8 in which he shut down the Marlins over seven innings, Nuno stumbled against San Francisco on July 13, giving up four earned runs on six hits over five innings.
