Diamondbacks 9, Cubs 3

New, comment

Wade Miley threw seven strong innings and the D-backs offense surged for nine runs en route to their second win in a row coming out of the break.

By the fourth inning, the Cubs were leading the ball game 3-1 and it looked like Wade Miley might have an early end to his day. From that point on, he settled down and threw three straight scoreless innings to finish the game with the stat line of 7 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB and 7 K.

The D-backs offense did the bulk of their work in the middle innings, mainly the fifth when they put up four runs off Chicago starter Travis Wood behind Miguel Montero's bases clearing double. But they didn't stop there. With the help of Paul Goldschmidt's bat, Arizona was able to add four runs -- three from Goldy -- in the remaining four innings to bury the Cubbies and win the first series of the second half.
