Dbacks MiLB Round-Up 7/18: McFarland Hits Walk-off

Perfect game

Dane McFarland, an interesting prospect drafted in the 12th round of the 2013 draft, hit a 2-run walk-off home run for Missoula in the bottom of the 9th to give the Osprey a 3-2 win. McFarland is a 5-tool athlete who some projected to go as high as the 5th round. But he had a commitment to the University of Oregon and it wasn't until the Diamondbacks offered him a $300,000 signing bonus that he committed to begin his professional career right away. He struggled mightily in his first season in the AZL Rookie League but this year is starting to show why the Dbacks were willing to give him such a substantial signing bonus.

He has good size at 6-4, 220 and is athletic enough to play center field but probably projects better to right field. Through 28 games for Missoula he is hitting .305 with 5 homers and an .837 OPS. Those aren't gaudy numbers yet but his enticing combination of power and speed make him one to really watch in the next couple of years.
