It has been a while since the Diamondbacks have had an unexpected double-header. That one was almost exactly a year ago, against the Rangers at Chase Field, but of course, that one was always intended to be that way. I note they didn't bother trying to repeat it this year, even though we will be at home on Memorial Day on Monday. I guess last season's attendance, with a mere 23,622 there for the night-cap, wasn't enough. I suspect they largely ended up dividing the crowd over the two games, rather than creating any kind of synergistic boost at the gates.

The time the team had to play two games in a day before that, was in August 2012, when they met the Marlins in Arizona. However, that was at least somewhat pre-scheduled. A glitch in the software meant that the D-backs had originally been slated to play 23 games in a row, more than the permitted maximum of 20 without a day off. The way of getting around this mistake, was to play two games in one day, and then take the next one off. Which seems kinda pointless to me: it's like your boss giving you a vacation, only if you come in and pull a double-shift on the day before.

If you're looking for the last weather-induced double-bill, you have to go back even further - playing half your games under an air-conditioned roof clearly had its benefits. More than three years in fact, to Tuesday, May 24, 2011 in Colorado. We needed to reschedule a game from April 3 - yeah, who'd have thought, playing in Denver on that date might not work out too well? We lost the first 4-12, then won the nightcap 5-2, but events on the field that day were overshadowed by the death of a fan at Coors Field. Hopefully, we'll avoid anything like that happening today.

Xipooo will be your guest recapper for the first game, so stick around.
