Dbacks MiLB Round-Up 5/23: Chafin Solid in AAA Debut

Andrew Chafin made his first start for AAA Reno and had a solid night going 7 innings allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and no walks with 4 strikeouts. Two of the three runs came on a 2-run homer in the 5th inning. Chafin is still being eyed as a future starter and his improved control over the last two seasons gives him hope. He can always fall back on the idea of being a reliever but for now that's not the plan. Just as impressive is his outing was in one of the most hitting friendly parks in all of baseball in Albuquerque.

Snake Stars
3 Stars: Mike Jacobs, Reno 4 for 5, 2 R, 2 DBL, 1 RBI
2 Stars: Dustin Martin, Mobile 4 for 5, 2 R, 2 DBL, 1 RBI
1 Star: Didi Gregorius, Reno 4 for 5, 1 R, 1 DBL, 1 RBI
0 Stars: Daniel Palka, South Bend 0 for 4, 4 K

AAA: Reno 8 @ Albuquerque 3. Andrew Chafin had a nice AAA debut and the offense did its job to make him a winner. Roger Kieschnick got things started with a 2-run homer in the first inning, and Mike Jacobs and Didi Gregorius put on hitting displays with 4-hit nights each. Jess Todd and Joe Paterson added shutout relief innings to complete the effort.

AA: Mobile 7 @ Tennessee 1. Justin Fitzgerald had an excellent start going 5+ innings allowing 1 run on 6 hits and no walks while striking out 4. Dustin Martin was the offensive star going 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Sean Jamieson and David Peralta each went 2 for 5 with a double. Three relievers went the rest of the way with 7 more strikeouts.

A+: Visalia 2 @ San Jose 6. Spencer Arroyo got hammered for 6 runs in the third inning and that was pretty much it. The offense only managed 2 runs on 6 hits led by Alex Glenn who went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. John Omahen did a nice job in relief with 3 shutout innings on 1 hit.

A: South Bend 1 @ Great Lakes 4. Sean Furney had another less-than-impressive start allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits and 3 walks in less than 5 innings of work. The offense could only come up with 1 run in support on 7 hits. Andrew Velazquez had 2 hits with a double and a stolen base (his 11th). Chuck Taylor had 2 hits with a double and Steve McQuail went 2 for 2 with a walk.
