Another low offense night from the Diamondbacks wasted a solid outing from Brandon McCarthy on the mound. The only Diamondbacks runs came off the bat of Gerardo Parra on a eight inning home run, scoring Ender Inciarte. That lead didn't last, with Brad Ziegler giving up the tying run on a sacrifice from Jon Jay, and the only real Diamondbacks threat in extra innings ended with Inciarte being thrown at at home on a Paul Goldschmidt double in the tenth. The winning run in the twelfth came with the bases loaded and nobody out for St. Louis, as Chris Owings made a throwing error to home plate to allow the run in.
The poor play wasted otherwise decent pitching from the Arizona staff. McCarthy went six innings and allowed one run. Evan Marshall pitched two scoreless innings in extras, but Trevor Cahill's rough twelfth inning and the error was the Diamondbacks downfall.
