So, the win streak which started with a bullpen meltdown in Chicago, ended in the same way, as Joe Thatcher and Trevor Cahill (with a little assist from Martin Prado) couldn't hold on to a three-run lead for three outs in the eighth innings yesterday. Much criticism of Kirk Gibson's management, and some is certainly justified, though his options were limited by both Brad Ziegler and Addison Reed having pitched in three consecutive games, so effectively being crossed off. The aim was clear: get through the eighth and turn the save situation over to J.J. Putz in the ninth. However, it didn't quite work out that way.
It's really the manner of the loss which is particularly annoying, rather than the loss itself - the pitching match-up there didn't seem to favor Arizona at all, but we got an excellent performance from Bronson Arroyo, and hit Cliff Lee far better than expected. Not being able to take advantage of that, is certainly a downer. We'll see how the team bounces back from this. On the opposition side, there'll be a familiar face, as Jody Jackson subsequently Tweeted:
