It's amazing to think that there are only two ballparks left in the majors which were build before 1960 - Wrigley and Fenway. And I think it's particularly ironic that the Cubs demanded new spring training facilities from Mesa, when their park there was barely a decade old, while continuing to operate on an everyday basis at Wrigley, with its utilities which are positively antediluvian in comparison! But it is definitely an icon, and one that we certainly want to get out to and visit, one of these days. I don't think it's likely to be going anywhere, any time soon though.
It may have that in common with the 2014 Diamondbacks, who continue to stagger from defeat to defeat, with almost no aspect of the team able to perform adequately on a consistent basis. Last night it was just about everything that went wrong: the defense allowed four unearned runs, neither starting pitching nor the bullpen were able to restrain the Cubs, and the offense were just as ineffective. Even the players' comments after last night were almost fatalistic in some ways, and that's not a good sign. I think it may only be a matter of time now before the hammer descends. Dead men walking...
