There was a time when Chase Anderson was one of the organization's top pitching prospects. Then he missed all of 2011 to injury, but bounced back nicely with a good year for Mobile. Then he was sent to Reno and got bounced around like everyone else and even got demoted to the bullpen. Look at his K/BB ratios as he climbed through the minors...3.69, 4.56 and 3.88. Even during his struggles in Reno he was at 2.42. The team dropped him back down to Mobile this season and he's cleaning up through two starts with 12 shutout innings on 5 hits, 2 walks and 12 strikeouts. He's already 26 and you have to figure he'll be giving it another go in Reno before long at the rate he's going.
Snake Stars
3 Stars: Chase Anderson, Mobile 6 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 0 ER, W (2-0)
2 Stars: Brandon Sinnery, Visalia 7 IP, 6 H, 2 BB, 3 K, 0 ER, W (1-0)
1 Star: Didi Gegorius, Reno 3 for 5, 1 R, 2 DBL, 1 RBI
0 Stars: Stryker Trahan, South Bend 0 for 5, 5 K
Triple A: Reno 9 Albuquerque 2. Mike Bolsinger had another fine outing allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5 over 6 innings of work. Eury de La Rosa followed with a shutout inning of relief and Derek Eitel finished the game with two more. Didi Gregorius had the bat working with a 3-hit night including 2 doubles and an RBI. Mike Jacobs added 3 hits with a double. Cody Ross did not play.
Double A: Mobile 6 Montgomery 0. Chase Anderson extended his scoreless streak to 12 innings to start the season and the offense scored 6 runs on 11 hits in support. Jon Griffin went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and Lars David had a double and 2 RBI.
High A: Visalia 5 Modesto 2. Brandon Sinnery was sharp with 7 innings of one-run ball (unearned that is) and Jimmie Sherfy picked up his second save. Sinnery allowed 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. Socrates Brito hit a 2-run homer and Brandon Jacobs added a solo shot. Brandon Drury had a double and on the year is 9 for 29 with 3 doubles and 3 home runs.
Low A: South Bend 2 Beloit 3. The Silver Hawks fell to 2-4 as Aaron Blair was very good but the offense couldn't give him enough support. Blair pitched 6 innings allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8. He has 18 strikeouts in 12 innings to start the year. I don't expect he'll be in South Bend too much longer. Jamie Westbrook went 2 for 3 with 2 walks and a double and is sporting a 5-game triple slash of .375/.524/.500. The rest of the vaunted South Bend lineup isn't doing quite so well. Stryker Trahan got the Golden Sombrero plus one, going 0 for 5 with 5 Ks. He's hitting .167 so far. Daniel Palka is hitting .130. Andrew Velazquez .154. Colin Bray .071. Joe Munoz .211. Maybe the weather just sucks. Whatever it is we have higher expectations for many of the hitting prospects on this team.
