SnakePit Appraisal: Chase Anderson

The results are in, and the SnakePit has spoken. What did we think of Mr. Anderson...

Ralph Freso
Strengths:
  • "He and Collmenter seemed to be the anchors to this pitching staff." (Xipooo)
  • "Pitched great in the clutch. Did a terrific job vs low/no expectations." (Diamondhacks)
  • "Always a good thing when a pitching prospect comes out of nowhere to provide solid pitching at minimal cost." (Jim McLennan)
  • "Anderson was a top contributor. In 2014, Only Josh Collmenter had a lower ERA, and only Wade Miley had a better percentage of quality starts." (Makakilo)
  • "Didn’t even expect to see him at the MLB level in 2014. The fact that he managed a decent season deserves that 4 rating."
  • "Pitched pretty well for a guy with no experience at the MLB level." (Stephen Burt)
  • "I was pleased with what I saw... I always thought he could be a good middle or back of the rotation pitcher, and I still hold to that." (James Attwood)
  • "Good performance against low expectations." (shoewizard)
Weaknesses:
  • "I suspect we’ve seen the best of Chase Anderson." (Diamondhacks)
  • "Faded at the end of the season. I know his innings were way higher than last year...but it made me think that his luck might have been running out." (Paulnh)
  • "Prone to the long ball. Needs to work deeper into games." (Jim McLennan)
  • "Seems to have hit the wall around mid-August." (Fangdango)
  • "Threw too many innings. I suspect fatigue was starting to come into his performances later in the season." (Songbird)
Towards 2015:
  • "Let's hope there is no sophomore slump." (AzRattler)
  • "I think he will make a fine setup man or maybe even closer someday." (shoewizard)
  • "The league will have adjusted to him and he will need to adjust back." (Xipooo)
  • "I think he’d be better suited as a reliever or long relief guy out of the bullpen." (Stephen Burt)
  • "If the team signs a veteran pitcher in the winter, I think it will come down to a competition between Anderson and Nuno for the 5th spot in the rotation." (James Attwood)
  • "Will he or won’t he build on this season? If he answers that positively during the spring, then he makes the rotation." (Fangdango)
  • "Chase is our future ace." (AzDbackfanInDc)
The tally:
  • 5 - Highly satisfied: 28%
  • 4 - Fairly satisfied: 65%
  • 3 - Neither satisfied nor dissatisfied: 6%
  • 2 - Somewhat dissatisfied: 1%
  • 1 - Very dissatisfied: 1%

The consensus settled around a solid four, with almost two-thirds of the votes. The majority of the rest went above rather than below, and over the 161 votes cast, Anderson's average was a solid 4.18. That becomes the first figure we pin on to the appraisal leader-board. It looks a bit sparse at this point, but should fill out nicely over the coming weeks.

The leader-board:
  1. Chase Anderson: 4.18 (161)
