Diamondbacks 3, Nationals 2

It wasn't extra innings, or a walk-off, but the D-backs did leave it late, scoring twice in the eighth to come from behind and beat the Nationals in the season finale at Chase Field. They end the year with the same record as last, at an even 81-81.

Things started brightly, the D-backs getting a run in the first inning on a Paul Goldschmidt sacrifice fly, after an error by the pitcher on an Adam Eaton bunt put men on second and third with no outs. However, that was about all they would be able to do against the Nationals' spot starter Tanner Roark, who held us to three hits and a walk over seven innings. Wade Miley, in his final start, was almost as good, blanking the Nationals into the sixth, when errors by Martin Prado and Gerardo Parra allowed the Nationals to score twice. Miley ended the year by throwing seven innings, scattering eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts, and only one of the two runs allowed being earned.

The Diamondbacks were not to be denied their 42nd comeback win of the year, however. In the eighth, Eaton and Goldschmidt singled with one out - the latter extending his hit streak to 19 games - and Prado drove in Eaton with another single, tying the game. One out later, A.J. Pollock drove the ball back up the middle; the pitcher attempted a kick save, and by the time he corralled the ball, Pollock just reached first with a head-first slide, and pinch-runner Tony Campana scored from third, to give Arizona the lead. Brad Ziegler pitched a drama-free ninth, retiring the Nationals in order on eight pitches.

We join the Braves, Dodgers and Cardinals as the only teams in the National League to have finished at or above .500 each of the last three seasons. Just. :) azshadowwalker will be along with the guest recap in a bit, and we'll see you for Fang Food and the last Round Table of the regular season later.
