SnakeBytes 9/16: Delaying the Inevitable

The D-backs played well to finish off the series against the Rockies and now welcome back the Dodgers, whose magic number is down to 4 after their loss to the Giants. We'll see if we can delay the Dodgers' playoff berth for another series.

Stop hugging me Prado, we need to play.

I have no idea. It's the mentality I take to anyone else: Just go out and try to keep us in the game. I try not to think about that (past performances). It's when things go bad when you start thinking about stuff like that.

Wade Miley

It drives me nuts that people don't talk about him. His [Goldschmidt's] numbers are ridiculous. He's having an unbelievable year. He should be front and center in line for the MVP.  Without him, where are we at this year? The guy has carried us. He's the MVP every game. Why shouldn't he be the MVP for the year?

Daily Diamondbacks

D-backs' Miley remains perfect against Rockies
Miley ran his career record to 6-0 against the Rockies in the Diamondbacks' 9-2 victory Saturday, keeping hitters off-balance with his usual mix of a low-90s fastball, a changeup and a biting slider.

Goldschmidt the MVP? D-backs have no doubt
A strong case can be made that no one has more valuable to his team than Paul Goldschmidt this season. Goldschmidt, of course, will not make it. His teammates will, though, and it did not take another four-hit, five-RBI game like the one Goldschmidt had Sunday in an 8-2 victory over the Rockies to prompt them.

Goldschmidt, D-backs down Rockies in series finale
"He complained about how he hasn't been running the bases much lately," said manager Kirk Gibson. "Today was another good day for him, and he's done it many times for us."

Goldschmidt's five RBIs lead D-backs past Rockies
Throughout Paul Goldschmidt's breakout 2013 campaign, dry spells have been a rare occurrence for the All-Star slugger. Never really stuck in a prolonged slump, it has been the 26-year-old's remarkable consistency at the plate that has defined his stellar season, one that is sure to garner National League MVP Award votes.

Langwell impressing Gibson since joining D-backs
Although Matt Langwell has only appeared in three games since being acquired from the Indians in August as part of the Jason Kubel deal, the early results have been about as good as possible for the right-hander, who retired the first eight batters he faced, including three on strikeouts, before allowing a hit in Sunday's series finale.

Gibson: Parra growing, has room to improve
Gerardo Parra has experienced plenty of highs at the plate in 2013, but for the 26-year-old to take the next step in his maturation, D-backs manager Kirk Gibson would like to see development in one particular aspect of his game.

D-backs hope to stave off Dodgers' celebration
With their magic number to clinch the division sitting at four, the Dodgers simply need to split this week's series at Chase Field to claim their first division title since 2009. The D-backs, meanwhile, will need to win at least three of the four meetings to prevent the Dodgers from celebrating a division crown on Arizona's own home field.
