Diamondbacks Minor-League Report, 8/18

Arguably the most insane game of the minor-league season in Visalia: they fell seven behind before coming to the plate...and still won by 13 runs! But their 21 tallies wasn't even the heaviest offensive output of the day by a D-backs affiliate.

Evan Marzilli, shown here in his days with South Carolina, led an offensepocalype in Visalia tonight.

Triple-A Reno 4 @ Fresno 6 - Michael Bolsinger was hit hard for the Aces, allowing six runs over four innings on eight hits and a walk, with six strikeouts. Reno did fight back after falling 6-0 down by the end of the third, getting two-run homers from PH Alfredo Marte in the fifth and CF Brad Snyder in the eighth, but could get no closer, and were held to five hits. Chase Anderson struck out two in two scoreless innings of relief.

Double-A Mobile vs. Jackson: postponed due to inclement weather, and will be made up as part of a double-header tomorrow.

High-A Visalia 21, Stockton 8: Yep, you read that right. This started badly, the Ports scoring seven in the top of the first, but Visalia clawed their way back, taking the lead with a six-run fifth, then scoring eight more down the stretch. CF Evan Marzilli had five hits and five RBI, 2B Gerson Montilla fell a triple short of the cycle and drove in four, and only one hitter failed to reach base safely three times. Conrad Flynn got the win for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, after Daniel Watts allowed eight runs in 2.1 innings as the starter.

A-ball South Bend 1, Bowling Green 7: The Silver Hawks went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, and it cost them as the Hot Rods blew open a close game with a four-run eighth off the South Bend bullpen. Aaron Blair had a decent start, being charged with two runs over six innings on five hits and a walk, with three strikeouts. DH Roidany Aguila doubled and singled, while SS Andrew Velazquez had a pair of hits for South Bend.

Low-A Hillsboro 5 @ Spokane 1: The Hops left it late too, 1B George Roberts being HBP with the bases loaded in the eighth to break a 1-1 tie. Hillsboro then added three insurance runs in the ninth, including CF Taylor Ratliff's  third hit of the night, a two-run single. RF Brian Billigen had three hits including his first home-run and C Elvin Soto added a couple of singles. Ryan Doran allowed one run over eight innings to get the W.

Rookie Missoula 0, Orem 8: In this all-avian encounter, the Osprey were blanked by the Owlz, managing a mere four hits - two of those were by LF Justin Williams. Adam Miller had a rough start for Missoula, allowing 12 hits and two walks in five innings, and being charged with six runs, five earned. The wonderfully-named Tyler Toyfair retired all five batters he faced in relief, three by strikeout.

DSL D-backs 23, Reds 9: Another big comeback here, the D-backs trailing 8-2 in the middle of the fourth, but scored 16 over the seventh and eighth - 3B Eudy Ramos homered twice in the latter, part of a five RBI game. 1B Ismael Pena had two triples and a double, scoring four times, and LF Luis Veras had three hits and drove in three runs. Rafael Pujols got the W in relief, allowing an unearned run over four innings. The teams combined for eight errors.

AZL D-backs 15, Royals 6: The offensive Sunday continued here, led by LF Yeisson Rosario, who had four hits, five RBI and finished a double short of the cycle. 3B Jason Cordero had three hits and scored four times, as the top three in the D-backs line-up all went 3-for-6. Anfernee Benitez struck out six over four innings, allowing two runs, one earned. Luis Hernandez started the eighth for the D-backs and walked all four batters he faced.
