Diamondbacks recall Tyler Skaggs, Chaz Roe; Cody Ross to DL, Zeke Spruill optioned

The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled right-handed pitcher Chaz Roe and left-handed pitcher Tyler Skaggs from Triple-A Reno, placed outfielder Cody Ross on the 15-day disabled list with a dislocated right hip and optioned Zeke Spruill to Reno, according to D-backs' Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

A flurry of roster moves for Arizona, though nothing particularly unexpected. Spruill has been sent down to Reno, with the expectation that Trevor Cahill will come back the next time his slot in the rotation crops up, and Ross's dislocated hip results in the expected DL move [no further word on the prognosis for that, but the general feeling is that his 2013 is done, and medium-well at that]. Meanwhile Skaggs and Roe come up to join the bullpen: one of them will likely end up being optioned back down when it comes time to activate Cahill. Skaggs sald he will work long relief as needed

Roe, 26, was 0-1 with 8 saves and a 1.21 ERA (3 ER in 22.1 IP) in 23 relief appearances with Double-A Mobile and Reno this season. He also has appeared in 4 games over 2 stints with the D-backs, going 1-0 with a 5.79 ERA (3 ER in 4.2 IP). Skaggs, 22, has combined to go 6-7 with a 4.16 ERA (41 ER in 88.2 IP) in 16 games (14 starts) with Single-A Visalia and Reno in 2013. In 7 starts with Arizona this season, he is 2-3 with a 5.35 ERA (23 ER in 38.2 IP).

Ross, 32, was hitting .278 (88-for-317) with 17 doubles, 8 home runs and 38 RBI in 94 games in his first season with the D-backs, including a .395 (17-for-43) average over his last 12 games. Spruill, 23, was 0-2 with a 5.56 ERA (7 ER in 11.1 IP) in 6 games (2 starts) with the D-backs this season. He suffered the loss yesterday in a 9-5 defeat to the Mets, allowing one earned run in three innings.
