Dbacks Minor League Round-Up 7/31: Who is Jose Queliz?

Jose Queliz hit for the cycle last night in Missoula's 7-3 win.
Jose Queliz hit for the cycle last night in Missoula's 7-3 win.

Missoula has a young catcher who has basically taken a stranglehold on the catcher's position by the name of Jose Queliz. He's sporting a .907 OPS. He's 6-3, 200 pounds. He's not yet 21. He's throwing out 42% of base-stealers. His K rate is under 14%. He's hitting .354 for the season. Sounds like Michael Perez from last season who we all were (and still are) very excited about. I understand he barely has 100 at bats so this year. But he looks pretty good so far. He's from the Dominican Republic and was signed as an unsigned free agent last year. His first season in the DSL was hardly anything to get over-excited about, but it was good enough. He's fought his way into the #3 hole in a good Missoula lineup. Oh, and by the way, he hit for the cycle last night. Right now he's one to keep watching.

Triple A: Reno 3 @ Oklahoma City 4. Mike Bolsinger had another decent start going 6 innings allowing 3 runs on 8 hits. The offense scrapped back to tie it in the top of the 9th on a wild pitch. But Evan Marshall surrendered the winning run in the bottom of the 9th when he hit a batter who came around to score on a single with 2 outs. Juan Rivera hit a 2-run homer in the 4th, his 6th. Brad Snyder and Ed easley each added a pair of singles.

Double A: Mobile 4 @ Pensacola 3. The BayBears won a tight one with mark Serrano on the mound allowing 3 runs on 7 hits over 5+ innings. The bullpen was terrific adding 3.1 shutout innings with Jake Barrett getting his 7th save. Mike Freeman led the offense going 3 for 4 with a double.

High A: Visalia 2 @ San Jose 5. Eddie McKiernan had a sub-par outing allowing 5 runs over 5+ innings. The offense couldn't overcome that plating just 2 runs, both coming off the bat of Jon Griffin, including a solo home run.

Low A: South Bend - Rained Out

Short Season A: Hillsboro 7 @ Vancouver 1. The Hops got a much-needed win as Round 1A pick Aaron Blair got his first professional win with a sharp 5-inning effort in which he allowed just 1 run on 3 hits. Tyler Linton led a balanced offense with 2 hits.

Rookie: Missoula 7 Helena 3. Jose Queliz hit for the cycle to lead a 12-hit attack. Queliz tripled in the 1st, homered in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, and singled in the 7th to complete the feat.
