Dbacks Minor League Round-Up 7/12: Future Closer Barrett

Jake Barrett is pitching like he wants a big league job sooner than later.
Jake Barrett is pitching like he wants a big league job sooner than later.

Since being promoted to Mobile a couple of weeks ago reliever Jake Barrett continues to perform, and his future is really starting to take shape as a back-end-of-the-bullpen guy. He was dominating for Visalia piling up strikeouts and saves. He has made six appearances for Mobile since June 28 and has 4 saves, 2 hits allowed in 6.1 innings, and a .095 BAA. I can easily see Barrett earning a bullpen job for the big club next year as maybe a 6th or 7th inning guy, and if he performs well to be in line to earn a more important spot going forward. In any case, he's looking like a good one.

Snake Stars
3 Stars: Dustin Martin, Mobile 4 for 5, 2 R, 1 DBL, 1 HR (5), 1 RBI
2 Stars: Charles Brewer, Reno 6 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 3 K, 0 ER, W (4-7)
1 Star: Jamie Westbrook, AZL Dbacks 2 for 5, 2 R, 1 DBL, 1 HR (1), 2 RBI
0 Stars: Matt McPhearson, AZL Dbacks 0 for 4, 2 K, .175 BA

Triple A: Reno 4 @ Tacoma 1. Charles Brewer tossed 6 shutout innings on 5 hits and 3 walks and Chaz Roe pitched a perfect 9th for his 6th save. Chris Owings went 3 for 5 with an RBI to lead the offense. Mike Jacobs and Josh Wilson each had a pair of hits.

Double A: Mobile 9 @ Jacksonville 8. The offense got out to a 5-run lead behind Dustin Martin's 4-hit game and held on for a one-run win. Martin included a double and a home run in his big night. Justin Greene and Garrett Webber each went 3 for 4 to add to the offensive outburst. Andrew Chafin had a so-so start but he kept things under control allowing 4 runs in 6 innings on 9 hits and 2 walks. Jake Barrett pitched a perfect 9th for his 4th save.

High A: Visalia 2 San Jose 12.The Rawhide got waxed as Cody Wheeler had a rough start allowing 4 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks. Robert Coe followed and wasn't any better surrendering 6 more runs. The defense was also bad allowing 5 unearned runs. The offense provided 7 hits, with 2 from Jon Griffin.

Low A: South Bend 5 Kane County 4. Kyle Winkler had a good start going until he allowed 3 runs in the 6th inning. The bullpen did well to keep it close and allow for the comeback with Blake Perry pitching 2 shutout innings for the win. Enrique Burgos pitched a perfect 9th with 2 strikeouts for his 9th save. Rudy Flores provided the big blow on offense with a 2-run homer in the 7th (his 10th) to turn a one-run deficit into a one-run lead. Socrates Brito went 3 for 4 with a double and a triple and has 15 hits in his last 7 games.

Short Season A: Hillsboro 4 @ Tri-City 6. Ben Eckels had a rough start for the second consecutive game allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits and 3 walks in 4+ innings. J.R. Bradley followed (he was demoted earlier this week) and allowed an additional run. Yogey Perez-Ramos paced the offense with 3 hits including a triple.

Rookie: Missoula 0 Ogden 10. Felipe Perez had his first poor start as a professional allowing 6 runs (4 earned) over 5 innings. Bobby Hillier allowed 4 more runs in his 3 innings. And the offense came up with just 2 hits. A forgettable game.

AZL Rookie: Dbacks 7 @ Royals 4. Brad Keller continues to shine on the mound giving another quality start with one run allowed on 5 hits with 7 strikeouts over 5 innings. He's 4-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his first 5 professional starts. Jamie Westrbrook (from Basha High in Gilbert) led the offense with a double, his first professional home run, and 2 RBI. Justin Williams went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
