SnakeBytes 6/9: Not Well, For Starters

In the past 10 games, Diamondbacks starters have an 8.67 ERA, which ranks dead last in the majors in that span and have raised their season total to 4.09. But even after this horrendous stretch, they are still ranked 16th in the MLB yet only 10th in the NL. Just shows the difference between the AL and NL. The Dbacks look to Tyler Skaggs to continue his surprising start to the season in the series finale before they head back on the road for 6 games against the Dodgers and Padres. We hear from Kirk Gibson and Ray Montgomery on this edition of SnakeBytes.

Quotables

That one happened in 24 pitches. It happened quick. They scored six runs on 24 pitches.

We'd like to have better performances, but it wasn't long ago that the starters were dominating. It's the ups and downs of the season. We'll have to reflect on what happened and have [Cahill] turned around for his next start, the same thing with Ian. It's just part of going through a season.

You think about how it breaks down from rotation projections in Spring Training to how it is now, I think that makes it clear. It really is dangerous to think that you're set at any position, because in the blink of an eye, things change so rapidly and before you know it, you're searching for it.

Starters' struggles a worrying trend for D-backs | foxsportsarizona.com
Trevor Cahill's eight-run disaster in a 10-5 loss to the Giants on Saturday was the latest example of the disappointing start the D-backs have gotten from their rotation. Cahill's six-run fourth inning led to a second loss this week in which the D-backs were buried by a bad inning.

"I would like to see better performances," manager Kirk Gibson said, "but it wasn’t long ago they were dominating. It’s the ups and downs of a season." He’s right, and most likely it is nothing to get too worked up about, but we mention this for a couple of reasons.

But as Arizona has seen firsthand this season with injuries to veterans Brandon McCarthy, Daniel Hudson and Ian Kennedy, teams can never have enough starting pitching. With that in mind, the D-backs selected two advanced college arms with their first two picks in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft on their way to taking 16 pitchers and 25 position players overall throughout the three-day process.

Just 18 years old, Cordero stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 174 pounds. He'll grow into his medium frame more, but he already has a lot of defensive tools, including plus arm strength. Aside from manning shortstop, Cordero also played some outfield at the academy, where his speed and strong arm were put to good use.
