Shortstop prospect Andrew Velazquez made his season debut in full-season South Bend last night playing second base and shortstop in both games of a double-header. Velzaquez had been in extended Spring Training and it was assumed he would be heading to one of the short season teams later this month. So it was a pleasant surprise to see him land in South Bend, which is where I thought he should have been placed after a terrific first season. Velazquez had an excellent debut going 1 for 4 with a double and a stolen base in Game 1, then going 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI in Game 2. And as an aside South Bend won both games.

Triple A: Reno 5 Colorado Springs 12. Reno dropped their 8th in a row as Charles Brewer was less than stellar and the bullpen was just as bad. Brewer went 5 innings allowing 6 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks. He did strike out 7. He lost to Drew Pomeranz who improved to 7-1. Tuffy Gosewisch had a nice game going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored. Matt Davidson also had a 3-hit night with a double and a run scored. Tony Campana clubbed a rare 2-run homer, his first.
Double A: Mobile - off day
High A: Visalia 2 Rancho Cucamonga 1. Starter Robert Coe allowed just one run on one hit (a solo home run) over 6 innings in a pitcher's duel that was closed out by the bullpen. Tyler Green made his first appearance of the season off the disabled list with 1 inning of shutout relief. Seth Simmons pitched a scoreless 8th to earn the victory, and Kaleb Fleck pitched a perfect 9th with 2 strikeouts for his 6th save. Ryan Court delivered the game-winning hit in the 8th, a run-scoring triple as part of his 2-hit game. Yosbel Guttierez delivered the other run with a home run in the 5th.
Low A: Game 1: South Bend 6 Lake County 1. Brandon Sinnery delivered a 7-inning complete game victory allowing 1 run on 3 hits and a walk. Carter Bell drove in 4 runs on a double and a single to pace the offense. Brandon Drury delivered an RBI double and Andrew Velazquez made his season debut going 1 for 4 with a double and a stolen base.
Low A: Game 2: South Bend 5 Lake County 2. Blake Perry limited Lake County to 2 runs (1 earned) on just 1 hit but 5 walks while striking out 5. That makes 5 consecutive starts that Perry has allowed 1 earned run or less. Carter Bell had 2 more hits in the nightcap with a double, a homer (his 2nd) and 1 RBI. Andrew Velazquez was perfect at the plate going 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI. RJ Hively pitched a scoreless 7th for his 16th save.
