Dbacks Minor League Round-Up 6/5: Breland Almadova - Another CF Prospect

We've all been hearing about the team's organizational philosophy of drafting "up-the-middle" athletic players. Well, just to reemphasize that point, the Dbacks have yet another center field prospect that hasn't been talked about much who was drafted in 2012 and is playing some pretty good baseball. That man is Breland Almadova who was drafted in the 37th round of the 2012 draft out of the University of Hawaii. He had a pretty good first year playing center field full-time for Missoula hitting .306 with a .785 OPS. He earned a job manning the outfield for South Bend this year and his performance is not tailing off. He's hitting .290 with a .382 OBP and he's even hit 4 home runs. Perhaps one of his best attributes is his BB/K ratio has been running around .65 both last year and this year. The guy doesn't strike out much. The organization is loaded at center field and Almadova has a lot of bodies to climb over to become relevant, but he's doing his part on the field and bears further attention as he progresses.

Triple A: Reno - off day

Double A: Mobile 5 @ Jacksonville 1. David Holmberg was terrific once again as he tossed 7 shutout innings to lead Mobile to the win. Holmberg allowed 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2 with 10 groundouts versus 4 fly outs. Keon Broxton delivered the big blow on offense with a 3-run homer in the 4th inning as part of his 3-hit night. Nick Ahmed had a pair of doubles and an RBI as he tries to get untracked from his season-long hitting slump. Jon Griffin and Garrett Webber each added a pair of singles.

High A: Visalia 7 @ Lake Elsinore 6. Keith Hessler dug the team a deep hole when he surrendered 6 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. But credit to him for grinding out 4 more shutout innings which allowed the offense to get back into it. And get back into it they did as Ryan Court delivered a pair of doubles and 3 RBI in leading the offense to 7 unanswered runs. David Nick and Sean Jamieson each had three hits and scored 2 runs at the top of the order, and Tom Belza added 3 RBI. Conrad Flynn followed Hessler with 2.2 scoreless innings, and Jake Barrett pitched a scoreless 9th for his 14th save.

Low A: South Bend 6 Lake County 2. Daniel Watts was at it again with another good start allowing 2 runs in 7+ innings to earn his 8th win. Brandon Drury hit his 8th home run in the 4th inning, a 2-run shot. Roidany Aguila hit his 5th home run in the 6th. Socrates Brito went 3 for 4, Breland Amadova went 2 for 3 including his 4th homer, and Alex Glenn went 2 for 4 with a double. J.R. Bradley finished the game with 1.1 shutout innings and had a 1.54 ERA in May, perhaps his best stretch of pitching since becoming a pro. He may not be done yet after all.
