SnakeBytes 6/3: Corbin Unspectacular; But 'twas the Cubs

While not having his best stuff again, Patrick Corbin did just enough against a terrible Cubs team to keep himself and the D-backs in the game while also becoming the first 9 game winner this season.. But with all the injuries we have sustained lately, you have to ask yourself when they will start feeling the effects of that. Kirk Gibson talks Patrick's latest start and the maturation of Gerardo Parra, while Miguel Montero takes some advice from Little Leaguers.

He pitched good for us, gave us a chance to win. Patrick did his job, and the bullpen came in and shut them down.

-- Kirk Gibson

He just keeps getting better. He's got a very quick bat. He's unreal, the enthusiasm he brings, the dialogue that he has, he's just really coming into his own. He's certainly ready for it, he's certainly earned this opportunity. Got to keep him healthy, though.

-- Kirk Gibson

I just stopped thinking and stopped trying and just let it happen. I stayed nice and relaxed -- see the ball, hit the ball. It was good today. Hopefully I get my confidence back and hopefully get a spark.

-- Miguel Montero

Corbin again finds a way, ties D-backs record |
There wasn't anything dazzling about the performance, which allowed Corbin to move into a tie with former Cy Young winner Brandon Webb for the best start to a season in franchise history, but it was effective

Arizona Diamondbacks at Chicago Cubs - June 2, 2013 Recap |
Patrick Corbin lacked a finishing touch on Sunday, but the D-backs left-hander found a way to win with an assist from his offense.

Cahill faces Lynn as Cardinals host D-backs |
With the teams set to reunite for a four-game set on Monday night at Busch Stadium, St. Louis has lost only one other series this season. The Cardinals own the best record in the Majors as they head into a potential playoff preview with the D-backs, who lead the National League West.

Goldschmidt keeping perspective amid big year |
Saturday's grand slam came after three strikeouts and a walk but was just the latest example of Goldschmidt's ability to move on from failures and triumphs. Whether it's a big hit or a double-play ground ball, Goldschmidt rarely, if ever, carries weights of the past on his big shoulders.

Will move to cleanup spot get Montero going? |
As much of a blow as it was for the D-backs to lose third baseman Eric Chavez to an oblique strain, the injury created an opportunity for catcher Miguel Montero. Montero, still working out of a season-long slump, slid into Chavez's cleanup spot in the batting order Friday, and the D-backs are hoping the move can help jumpstart Montero's season.

Gibson on Samardzija: Shut up and pitch
"It’s part of the game," Gibson said. "Whatever. He didn’t get the win, did he? Maybe the next time he should just shut the f--- up and pitch."

Parra becoming mainstay in D-backs' outfield |
When it comes to playing time in the outfield, D-backs manager Kirk Gibson will try to rotate A.J. Pollock, Cody Ross and Jason Kubel between two spots. When it comes to Gerardo Parra, expect to see the outfielder in the lineup nearly every day.

"I was talking to Goldy about that on the bench and I was talking to Kubel about it before his big at-bat," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "You’ve just got to move on from that, you can’t get discouraged by what’s happened so far. …

MLB Power Rankings: Texas Rangers, St. Louis Cardinals in battle for No. 1 spot after ninth week
10. Arizona Diamondbacks Record: 32-24 Comment: Patrick Corbin on pace to go 26-0, which would be cool.

Where they stand; Willie Bloomquist’s return; farm report; & other stuff | Insiders
We can tell you how, one-third of the way into the season, the Diamondbacks have gotten to where they are, how they are eight games over .500 heading into a pivotal series against the St. Louis Cardinals. (And eight games over, by the way, is twice as many games over .500 as they were at any point last season.) We can’t, however, say with much certainty whether the things the Diamondbacks have done are going to continue. All we can say is, they have to like where they are.

Athleticism is high priority for D-backs in Draft |
D-backs general manager Kevin Towers returned to his scouting roots the last few weeks, crisscrossing the country to see about 20 amateur players in preparation for this week's First-Year Player Draft.
