Zeke Spruill Called Up, Josh Wilson DFA'd

The D'Backs made a pair of roster moves today, presumably in an effort to shore up the bullpen over the next few days.

USA TODAY Sports

It had been reported earlier today that RHP Zeke Spruill had been called up, but there was no indication of the necessary corresponding move at the time. Well, it's been announced, as Josh Wilson has possibly finished his third tour of duty with the Diamondbacks as he was designated for assignment. He had previously been on the team in 2009 and 2011, which means there's a slight chance we will see Josh Wilson in a D'Backs uniform in 2015. It's science.

Spruill was a part of the package in the Justin Upton trade (which you probably heard about.) He started the season in AA Mobile, where he put up a 1.42 ERA in five starts, which earned him a promotion to Reno. He had a rough start to his time in AAA, but has not given up any runs in his last two starts against Colorado Springs and Tucson.

The speculation here is that Spruill is up to provide long relief possibilities for the D'Backs, as Josh Collmenter went six innings on Wednesday against the Marlins.

The fact that Wilson is the corresponding move could indicate that Aaron Hill is close to coming back from his rehab assignment in Reno. The big league club still has Didi Gregorius, Willie Bloomquist, and Cliff Pennington to play the middle infield spots in the interim.
