Snake Bytes, 6/20: Blacked Out Edition

Trevor Cahill and Marlins rookie phenom Jose Fernandez faced off in an early afternoon match at Chase Field. Despite an early, injury-induced departure by Cahill, the fans (in attendance) were still rewarded with a pitching duel, one between Fernandez and Collmenter. Though Collmenter took a ND, the Diamondbacks took the win and the series.

"Do you see what Ross hits against lefties?" Gibson responded when asked why he used Ross in that situation. "I just liked the matchup."

Kirk Gibson

"He painted a pretty good fastball away for 1-1, then I chased a slider," Ross said. "And after I swung at that slider, I figured he was probably going to go back to it at some point, so in the back of my head I was sort of looking for it, but staying on the fastball."

Cody Ross

"I felt like I executed a good pitch there," Dunn said. "He just hit it. It was a slider down and in. It was a slider for a strike, not a chase pitch."

Ross Pinch-Hit Homer Supports Collmenter's Relief Outing / Collmenter Stellar in Relief

After getting hit by a line drive in the first inning, Arizona starter Trevor Cahill was forced from the game. Josh Collmenter came on in relief, throwing 6 innings of 1-hit baseball in order to keep the Diamondbacks in the game despite the offense having a miserable go against the rookie phenom starter for Miami, Jose Fernandez. After walking two batters in the eighth, Fernandez was lifted for reliever Mike Dunn, who was brought on to face Eric Hinske. Playing the numbers, Gibson burned Hinske and sent Ross up to bat. Ross launched a 1-2 pitch for a home run, his first pinch hit as a Diamondback. Heath Bell came on in the 9th and provided the fans with yet another harrowing example of the Heath Bell Experience© before closing out the game, giving the Diamondbacks a 3-1 win and a series victory.

Ross Sees Clearly Just in Time

It couldn't have come at a more opportune time. Cody Ross finally got his vision cleared up with new contact lenses just before Kirk Gibson turned to him and sent him in to pinch hit in the eighth inning of Wednesday's 0-0 game. Mike Dunn wishes the vision was still blurry as Ross deposited a 1-2 slider in the seats to lift the Diamondbacks to a 3-0 lead.

Martin Prado Working Through Slump

Despite having a down year, Diamondback third baseman Martin Prado doesn't like to look at the statistics, figuring they will only add to the chaos already developing in his head in trying to deal with struggling offensively.

No Rush to Promote Bradley

Despite the success of Miami starter Jose Fernandez, the Diamondbacks are in no hurry to promote their own young fireballer, Archie Bradley.

San Jose Files Lawsuit Against MLB

Tired of waiting for Bud Selig to actually do something about allowing the A's to move out of Oakland, San Jose filed a lawsuit against MLB and Bud Selig claiming conspiracy to prevent the franchise form moving to the more lucrative market. Will the new litigation finally get Selig's office to make a decision?

Miguel Who?

Miguel Cabrera may be having another monster year in the American League, leaving almost everyone in the dust in terms of RBIs and batting average, just don't tell Chris Davis of Baltimore. Davis clubbed two more homers on Wednesday to raise his MLB leading total to 26, and he did it defeating Cabrera's Tigers.
