Things started brightly enough for the visiting team as a two-run homer off the bat of Miguel Montero, scored him and Paul Goldschmidt in the first inning. And an RBI groundout by Cliff Pennington extended the lead to three runs in the top of the fourth. However, everything went very badly wrong for the Diamondbacks in the bottom of the fourth, as four Padres hits and a Didi Gregorius error led to five runs for the home team, capped off by a three-run homer for Yasmani Grandal. Wade Miley ended the day working six innings, and allowed six runs on six hits and a walk, but only one of those runs was earned. Charles Brewer threw two scoreless frames in relief.
On offense, Arizona was held to only seven hits, but did get the tying run to the plate in the ninth, after Gerardo Parra doubled home Pennington to pull us within two. However, Gregorius flew out to center, as the D-backs dropped another game to the Padres. Montero had a pair of hits and a walk, with Jason Kubel reaching base safely with a hit and a walk. The series concludes tomorrow afternoon, with Ian Kennedy taking on Clayton Richard. We'll be trying to avoid our first road sweep of the season, and only second overall.
