Archie Bradley racked up 8 more strikeouts in 5 innings of work last night and improved to 2-0 with a 1.26 ERA. That gives him 43 strikeouts in 28 innings of work, tops in the California League by a sizable margin (Chafin is 3rd and Barbosa is 5th). He also leads the league in ERA and innings pitched and sports a K/BB of 4.3. After every outing I wonder when he'll get promoted to Mobile.
Around the leagues, Randall Delgado was a little better as Reno lost to Fresno 9-8. David Holmberg did some good things though Mobile lost 6-5. Bradley was the star again in a 3-1 Visalia win. And the South Bend offense exploded for 16 runs in a high-scoring win over Beloit.
Snake Stars
3 Stars: Ryan Court, South Bend 3 for 5, 4 R, 1 DBL, 1 HR (1), 2 RBI
2 Stars: Archie Bradley, Visalia 5 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 8 K, 1 ER, W (2-0)
1 Star: Ronnie Freeman, South Bend 3 for 6, 1 R, 4 RBI
0 Stars: Daniel Watts, South Bend 5 IP, 6 H, 6 BB, 5 K, 6 ER, 3 HR
Triple A: Reno 8 Fresno 9. Randall Delgado was actually much better this go-around, though it was hardly a stellar outing. He got through 6 innings and allowed 9 hits and 5 runs (3 earned). But more importantly he walked none, though he only struck out 2. It was a step in the right direction. Delgado actually left the game with the lead but Matt Gorgen had another bad outing and yielded 3 runs without retiring a batter. The offense did its part with 11 hits and 3 home runs. Chris Owings hit his 2nd homer and collected 4 RBI. Kila Ka'aihue hit his 5th and Brad Snyder his 3rd.
Double A: Mobile 5 @ Jacksonville 6. David Holmberg started and wasn't bad but wasn't great either. He tossed 6 innings allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8. The offense rallied with 5 runs in the 7th and 8th innings to tie it behind multi-hit games from Brent Clevlen and Nick Evans that included doubles by each. But Kevin Munson surrendered a walk-off solo home run in the 9th for the loss. Nick Ahmed and Justin Greene each had a pair of singles.
High A: Visalia 3 @ Bakersfield 1. Archie Bradley completed 5 innings allowing just 1 run on 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 8. Michael Perez hit a 3-run homer in the 1st inning (his 3rd) for all the runs they would need. Reliever Seth Simmons followed Bradley with 1.2 shutout innings. Patrick Schuster pitched a perfect 8th. And Jake Barrett added a perfect 9th for yet another save, his 6th.
Low A: South Bend 16 @ Beloit 10. This one was all offense as the Silver Hawks pounded out 19 hits and 16 runs to make a winner of Daniel Watts, who was hardly effective in getting the win. Watts did go 5 innings but gave up 6 runs on 6 hits and 6 walks. RJ Hively came on for the save (his 4th) with 2 innings of badly needed shutout relief. Everyone got in on the offense led by big nights from Ryan Court and Ronnie Freeman who earned some snake stars. Red-hot Brandon Drury had 3 more hits to raise his average to .311 and Socrates Brito added 3 hits of his own.
