Diamondbacks 1, Dodgers 0

The D-backs gave Joe Garagiola Sr the perfect sendoff. Trevor Cahill pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning, and Paul Goldschmidt brought home the winning run with one out in the ninth, to give Arizona the narrowest of wins over Los Angeles this afternoon.

USA TODAY Sports

It was an excellent pitching duel between Trevor Cahill and the Dodgers' Josh Beckett, matching each other zero for zero through the first seven frames. Cahill was relieved by Tony Sipp and Brad Ziegler with one out in the eighth, but posted easily his best line of the season, going 7.1 scoreless innings, on six hits and no walks, with four strikeouts. J.J. Putz got the win for his scoreless ninth, but give an assist to Miguel Montero for throwing out a runner at second to end the frame.

Beckett pitched even better through eight innings, striking out nine Diamondbacks, but A.J. Pollock looped a one-out knock to the gap in right-center, and took advantage of Carl Crawford's poor arm to reach second. With no-one warming in the bullpen, the Dodgers intentionally walked Montero to reach the right-handed Paul Goldschmidt, but he made them pay for their insolence, with a beautifully-placed single through the right side of the infield, and Pollock scored easily.

The Diamondbacks get to enjoy an off day tomorrow, with the series win in the bag. It's not possible to add guest recaps to the stream, so please find azshadowwalker's guest recap here.
