Samardzija has two years left in arbitration before becoming a free agent at the end of 2015. His numbers weren't anything special last year with a 4.34 ERA and a 91 ERA+. Here's the link to the MLB Trade Rumors page which comes from a Buster Olney tweet. Hard to imagine the Dbacks would give up a lot for a pitcher that looks an awful lot like the crew we already have. Samardzija did post an impressive 9.0 K/9 but all the other peripherals are pedestrian.
He was superior pitching out of the bullpen in 2011 and then had a decent season in 2012 with a 3.81 ERA and a 107 ERA+. But he seems to be going the wrong way. I can't say I'd be on board for this deal unless we're just stealing him for a couple of years. Maybe I'd be okay with Davidson or Owings or Holmberg straight up for him, but anything more than that and I'll be crying foul.
Stay tuned.
