The %vote column is the percentage of ballots that named the player last year, if they were on the ballot - it's blank otherwise. Yrs is the seasons in the majors, and WAR7 is the total WAR accumulated over their best seven seasons - it measures how good they were at the peak of the career [as opposed to total WAR, which tends to reward longevity as much]. I crammed in as many of the important stats as I could, given the column width: if you want more, Baseball-Reference.com has the full numbers for each player.
As we looked at in November, there are six players listed who, at one point or other in their careers, played for the Diamondbacks. Those are Cirillo, Clayton, Finley, Green, Sanders and Schilling, though Cirillo, Clayton and Green combined to be below replacement level (by bWAR) in their time here. Schilling is possibly going to be the only one to reach the 5% threshold, needed to be back on the 2014 ballot, and it would seem like a really huge shock if he were to reach the 75% needed for election this time. Indeed, it's possible the BBWAA will not elect anyone this time round, at least among the new additions.
Jack Morris would finally make it, on his fourteenth try, if he repeated his 13.2% improvement he made from 2011-12. He finished 48 votes short last time. Jeff Bagwell is the other candidate who appears to have the best shot, getting a solid 56% of ballots in his first appearance, despite doubts - albeit almost entirely circumstantial - concerning possible PED use. How are their chances? There has been a project to collate ballots from members who publicly declare them. So far, 111 BBWAA participants have opened up to provide their intentions, though that's less than 20% of last year's tally, so this is only a guide. The top ten on those 111 ballots are as follows:
- Craig Biggio: 78 votes (70.3%)
- Tim Raines: 71 votes
- Jeff Bagwell: 67 votes
- Jack Morrs: 65 votes
- Mike Piazza: 62 votes
- Barry Bonds: 50 votes
- Roger Clemens: 49 votes
- Curt Schilling: 44 votes
- Alan Trammell: 41 votes
- Lee Smith: 36 votes
As you can see, no-one would reach the 75% necessary,, if that selection are representative of the association as a whole. It'll be interesting to see how closely those numbers mirror the actual results, when they are announced later this morning. Incidentally, Schilling was the only one of the six ex-Diamondbacks to be named by anyone.
