Diamondbacks Top 60 Prospects: Off-season Update

With all the off-season moves mostly completed it's time to publish my most recent Top 60 prospect list. A new feature to the list is my personal rating system which assigns a number from 1-100 for each prospect. Also included in this update is a projection for what level that player will start the season in 2013.

Anyone in our system that still maintains rookie status is eligible for the list. We have some new arrivals on the list due to the off-season acquisitions, notably Didi Gregorius and Nick Ahmed. I also did a little shuffling of the Top 20 but nothing too dramatic. Here is the new rating system and it is essentially broken down into blocks of 10 with a description of each block.

Tyler Skaggs still gets our top spot with Archie Bradley and Adam Eaton a close second and third. After seeing Skaggs for a period in the majors last year it was tempting to drop him down a couple of spots with some doubt creeping in on his ceiling. The strength of the system is clearly in starting pitching, shortstop and catcher. It wasn't much more than a year ago that catcher and shortstop were two of the weaker position groups in our system and that has been corrected due to recent acquisitions and drafts. Center field is also a strength with Eaton slated to be our starter and some young prospects at the lower levels.

Prospect Rating System
90-100 Outstanding prospect. All-Star potential.
80-89 Very good prospect. Potential feature player with above-average production.
70-79 Solid prospect. Has a chance of becoming a starting ML player.
60-69 Good prospect. Has a fair chance of making it to the majors.
50-59 Average prospect. Can make it to the majors with further development.
40-49 Borderline prospect. Can’t be written off yet but odds are against.
30-39 Poor prospect. Long shot to make the majors.
