Pit Your Wits Week 21: CAPTION THIS SUCKA

Zorlm_medium

Maybe it was the late game last night. Maybe it's the fact I had to drive around to three places to only have a bunch of unshaven men in Brian Urlacher jerseys tell me they don't have the specific plumbing part I need, but I'm a little tired and irritated. It doesn't help that last week's challenge was in a bit of a pickle, scoring wise.

At the time of writing the winner would be shared with 2 recs, a three way tie for second with 1 rec, and a many many many many way tie for third with 0 recs. Also making things awkward is that that those two 2 reccers got one of their two recs via me.

Now this happened a few weeks ago, and just to be cute I gave third place to the one entry that had no recs, just to teach a lesson about trying. Now I'm going to do a 180 on that decision and teach a lesson about reccing things for the love of Pete. So first and second place points are awarded, but no third place points. Before you shout "YOU JUST DID THAT BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE ME AND DON'T WANT ME TO GET POINTS", You have every right to think this way, but I have every right to tell you that you'd be wrong. (I hold the same opinion of Moon Truthers.)

I will acknowledge the flip side of this argument: People should post better stuff that moves people towards reccing it. I know it's been a long season and the D'Backs performance has sort of neutered everything, but we only have four more of these, so let's finish strong! I have faith in you!

ZM and Diamondhacks share the Gold today.

ZM:

"Still," by Ben Folds.

It’s a sadder song than really befits a league average team, but here me out on this. Last year ended poorly, but it felt like there were more good things on the horizon. Bauer and Skaggs were going to get here, Upton was only going to get better, Goldie was going to transform into a beast and take us to the next level. Our hopes were predicated on change.

But at the same time, 2011 was such a good season that we all wanted certain things to stay the way they were last year. We wanted Ian Kennedy to stay a Cy Young candidate, wanted Justin Upton to stay an MVP candidate, wanted Gibby to be some sort of magician that would allow the team to win a bunch of one-run games every year. In a sense, we were only okay with change that benefited the Diamondbacks.

But baseball doesn’t work that way. Upton and Kennedy have had down years, the team has failed to recapture their luck in one-run games, the young pitchers have shown flashes but been inconsistent. Things that we were perfectly comfortable with last year have gotten away from the team, and our perceptions of where the Diamondbacks stand have changed along with them, and not for the better. And I think that "Still" captures that apprehension about change, and that desire to hold onto the good things from the present, because they may prove to be all too transitory.

I feel like I may have taken this challenge too seriously…

This was the big downswing

from 2011’s improbable upswing. So, to cheer people up and gracefully acknowledge the laws of nature, let’s try a little Swing Time.

Common sense and a sense of humor are the same thing, moving at different speeds. A sense of humor is just common sense, dancing. - William James

Start of the Breakdown

by Tears for Fears.

Off the classic album "The Hurting," the song (and larger album) deal with a particular therapy Roland Orzabal enjoyed: primal screaming. Look, if you can’t figure out how this all connects to the Diamondbacks inconsistent play this year, I don’t know what to tell you.

The motto is not "Don't Disagree." It's "Disagree Better."

ISH:

Stuck in the Drive Thru

By Weird Al Yankovich. It’s a very long song that goes on and on and on about how The Weird One and his wife try and decide what’s for dinner, eventually chose to go to a fast food burger joint, spend five minutes (in the song) sitting in the drive through and then they find out that they don’t have any money to pay with, and then in the very end Yankovich realizes that after all that, they forgot the onions.

This sums up the Dbacks season pretty well. We sit around and sit around waiting for something to happen, the season is going to end, and we’ll all realize that they forgot the onions playoffs

Going back to basics this week, a caption contest. You look at a picture and think of a funny thing to say about it and post it here. You also rec other entries that amuse you in some fashion. The top three getters get points.

Here is the link to the image in question (Not posted to be on the safe side regarding image policies). It's sophomoric and crude, so right up the alley of this group!

Another thing to shake things up: Going by the calendar: September 26th will be the final round of Pit Your Wits. As a sort of "Thank you" for your participation this year, I am going to let YOU pick what the challenge is! How will you do this? Well either e-mail, tweet (both of those are accessible from my profile), or tell me if you happen to run into me in the street what an idea of a challenge could be. I will pick my personal favorite and use it for the final week's challenge using my own capricious judgement. Whoever submitted the winning entry will also get PYW points, AND I will give them a high-five the next time I possibly see them in person, so there's some extra incentive.

The winner will be announced on the 26th in that post, so entries can come in until then. Be as creative and off the wall as you want in these.

So think about that and send in your ideas. And also caption that picture of Chris Johnson. Get to it!
