Looks like the Giants might have dodged a bullet, by signing Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner to long-term contracts, rather than Tim Lincecum. For Cain has lived up to his contract this year, as much as Lincecum hasn't, culminating in the first perfect game in Giants' history on June 13. Admittedly, this was against the Astros, so it's probably the equivalent of six and two-thirds innings of two-run ball against a major-league team, but still... Against us, he has allowed one earned run in each of the last two starts, and those were both at Chase, not night games at AT&T. Here's our lifetime numbers against him (min: 8 PAs):
PA | AB | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | BB | SO | |||||
Justin Upton | 52 | 44 | 12 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 7 | 14 | .273 | .385 | .386 | .771 |
Miguel Montero | 47 | 40 | 9 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 8 | 6 | 11 | .225 | .340 | .400 | .740 |
Chris Young | 40 | 36 | 8 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 4 | 7 | .222 | .300 | .278 | .578 |
Gerardo Parra | 39 | 36 | 8 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 6 | .222 | .282 | .278 | .560 |
Aaron Hill | 20 | 18 | 7 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 0 | 1 | .389 | .368 | .833 | 1.202 |
Willie Bloomquist | 13 | 10 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 2 | 2 | .300 | .385 | .400 | .785 |
Paul Goldschmidt | 13 | 10 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 2 | .100 | .308 | .100 | .408 |
Mike Jacobs | 13 | 13 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 1 | .308 | .308 | .538 | .846 |
John McDonald | 8 | 8 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | .125 | .125 | .125 | .250 |
Total (all players) |
275 | 239 | 59 | 15 | 2 | 4 | 24 | 28 | 47 | .247 | .328 | .377 | .705 |
That's actually not too bad. Hill owns Cain in a level that's almost Goldzilla/Timmeh-esque. Which is good, but Goldschmidt certainly doesn't, being 1-for-10. Hey, you can't win all the time, can you? It's certainly a tough opponent for Miley, as he tries to boost his Rookie of the Year credentials in his penultimate start if the year. September has been rocky, with a 5.76 ERA in his four starts, even as he has gone 2-1 in those games. His overall numbers are still good, but there's still everything to play for, it seems. Here's our line-up.
- Adam Eaton CF
- Aaron Hill 2B
- Justin Upton RF
- Miguel Montero C
- Paul Goldschmidt 1B
- Gerardo Parra LF
- Cody Ransom 3B
- John McDonald SS
- Wade Miley P
