Diamondbacks 8, Rockies 7: Fat Kid On A See-Saw

Due to Jim Tracy's 75 pitch limit, the Rockies have had to go very deep into their bullpen.
Due to Jim Tracy's 75 pitch limit, the Rockies have had to go very deep into their bullpen.

The D'Backs came into tonight with vague but probably impossible playoff hopes, however beating up on Colorado is a noble goal for any team, regardless of playoff standing. And lately the Rockies have been displaying Astro levels of incompetence.

The D'Backs jumped out to an early lead, but Patrick Corbin could not hold the lead. Neither starting pitcher went very long and we had a relievergasm, complete with random oogy usage by Colorado. This game was a back and forth affair, but the D'Backs were able to hold on just enough to get the win.

Follow after the jump for some tension, and a Zagurski appearance. We were sure we lost his boarding pass for the flight to Denver. Tricky guy, him.

Faster than you could say "Funky Winkerbean", the D'Backs had gotten on the board. Adam Eaton tripled to lead off the game against Jhoulys Chacin, and Aaron Hill subsequently got a groundout that brought Eaton in. Justin Upton followed with a double down the first base line, and was brought in by Paul Goldschmidt who had a double of his own. Goldy was then brought in by Jason Kubel on a single to make the score 3-0 D'Backs before Corbin even took the mound.

The D'Backs failed to score in the 2nd, ending an eight inning scoring streak dating back to last night. Colorado got on the scoreboard in the bottom half, however, on an Andrew Brown solo shot. Two batters later, DJ LeMahieu tripled, partially thanks to a misplay in center for Eaton, and then scored on a Chacin single on a drawn in infield. Dexter Fowler then got a bunt single, and Josh Rutledge beat out a potential double play. This lead to Jordan Pacheco, or as I like to call him: Jordan Pacheco the GUY WHO IS TOTALLY WORSE THAN STALIN, got a double down the line to score both runners. He himself got thrown out at third on a tag play where John MacDonald took out an ump, but the Rockies took the lead 4-3.

Colorado continued its offensive upswing in the 3rd, when Wilin Rosario hit a ball to a place where he usually throws them when behind the plate, specifically the left-center field bleachers (because he's terrible defensively, that's the joke) to make it 5-3 Colorado. Jake Elmore pinch hit for Corbin and that ended his not so good very bad three inning outing.

For whatever magical Colorado reason, Chacin was pulled after four innings. Carlos Torres came in and while he got a clean 5th inning, the 6th was not so kind to him. A John McDonald single and walks to Mike Jacobs and Adam Eaton set up an Aaron Hill ricochet triple that cleared the bases to give Arizona the lead back. Justin Upton was walked and that ended Toress' night. Josh Outman came in and promptly walked Miguel Montero, and lo another pitching change happened. Something called "Edgemer Escalona" came in He struck out Goldy, but Jason Kubel was able to hit a sac-fly, and Chris Johnson then singled to bring in Upton to make the score 8-5 in favor of the good and wholesome people.

Mike Zagurski then came in and did Mike Zagurski things. At the end of his stint the score was 8-6. Brad Ziegler then came in and tried to get a double play, but there were two outs, so Dexter Fowler's groundout could only count for one out and that threat was ended.

Ziegler came in for another inning. Rutledge and Pacheco singled. Ziegler was able to get Rosario to ground into a double play, but Rutlege was able to score to shrink the lead to 8-7. Ziegler's double play, was his 19th the most by a reliever since Brad Ziegler four years ago. I sense a pattern here.

David Hernandez and J.J Putz came in and had some nice and clean innings to end this and ensure at least a split at Coors and at least a one day stay above Mt. .500

No green comments, so I will exercise my right to not award a COTD. You may then exercise your right to call me names and invoke Godwin's Law in your anger over this.

So tune in tomorrow afternoon to possibly see a D'Backs series win. That's a nice thing. If you don't think it's a nice thing, what is wrong with you? Go sit in the corner and think about what you did!
