Padres 9, D'Backs 5: Bauer Sour

There are no multiple exposure shots of him whipping back after a hit. I looked.

Trevor Bauer made his Arizona debut against the Padres tonight. (This all seems familiar). And... well, the odd numbered innings were good for him. Based on those alone, this kid is gonna be a good contributor to the rotation for the rest of the year!

Unfortunately, the tyranny of our numerical system forced him to pitch the second and fourth innings, and things that were not good happened, and happened often.

Save for one big blast, the offense was also disappointing and weak (much like the universe itself.) and the D'Backs dropped their fourth straight. Follow after the jump for the gory details.

Bauer showed the people gathered that he might just be good at this pitching thing by striking out the side in the first. He showed that he might still have a little bit to learn in the second by giving up a two-run homer to Yonder Alonso. Bauer also went on to walk Everth Cabrera, and Andrew Cashner (oops), but got Wil Veneble to fly out to end the inning.

Andrew Cashner was, for lack of better term, pwning the D'Backs through the first two innings. So it was a bit of fortuitous happenstance that he called the trainers over after warming up to start the third (apparent elbow injury?), and he was pulled. Ross Ohlendorf came in to relieve, but the D'Backs are equal opportunity chance squanderers, and came up empty despite a runner in scoring position. (That last part can be copied and pasted from previous recaps, probably).

The Padres struck again in the fourth. Cameron Maybin was on third base, and Ohlendorf bunted right to Bauer, with Maybin heading towards the plate, almost too easy!... Yeah it was, apparently. Bauer Buckner'd it and it made it 3-0 Padres. Alexi Amarista got a hit to make it 4-0, and Chase Headley cleared the bases with a triple to make it 7-0, and that was that for Trevor. Well, it can only look up from here.

Patrick Corbin came in and struck out the next two guys, which will lead to a lot of knee jerking of "PATRICK CORBIN IS GONNA WIN LIKE 500000 CY YOUNGS AND TREVOR BAUER IS GONNA BE THE NEXT TODD VAN BUSH" by your local knee jerk AzCentral comment-type-person.

All in all, not a good two days for pitchers named "Trevor".

It didn't really matter if Bauer was pitching a vintage Nolan Ryan type game, the D'Backs offense continued their impotence through the first four innings. It wasn't helped by Jason Kubel trying to throw to the first base dugout in the fifth, allowing another run. *sigh*. You know nice things? We cannot have them.

Ok, we can have a little bit of nice things. A bases loaded in the fifth inning situation for Jason Kubel was not passed up by him, as he hit one of those Grand Slams the kids seem to like. This made it 8-4, bad people.

Corbin did his damnedest to keep the D'Backs in it, including a pretty nifty defensive play in the seventh where he went to his extreme right and got Yonder Alonso out at second. He is only human, and gave up a pinch-hit home run to Jesus Guzman to make it 9-4.

All offensive chances after that were wasted because, apparently, hitting weak fly balls is the light and the way to holy salvation oyez oyez oyez.. Goldy singled in Upton in the ninth to make it 9-5, but Montero decided he wanted to get his 4th of July party on early and struck out.

Busy-ish gameday thread tonight, with just under 1,000 comments. DbacksSkins and ISH were tied in total comments at the time I took roll, something something student/master. AzDbackfanInDc, Clefo, PatrickPetersonAZ,, snakecharmer, Rockkstarr12, Tucson d-back fan, rd33, azshadowwalker, 4 Corners Fan, porty99, DbackCardsFan, hotclaws, onedotfive, asteroid, xmet, Ridster09, blue bulldog, Joel Preston, Jdub220, Muu, CaptainCanuck, Jim McLennan, Fangdango, GuruB, TinySarabia, dbacks79, PR151, and Husk are people who were also there.

So tomorrow the D'Backs try to avoid a sweep at home against the Padres. That is a really really weird sentence to type. I need to lie down for a bit. Game time is at 6:40 PM. I suggest the D'Backs watch Bill Pullman's speech from Independence Day a few times before the game.

With that, good night, and happy 4th o' July to all!
