The Diamondbacks have announced that infielder John McDonald has been paced on the disabled list with an oblique strain. Ironically enough, that is the injury that Geoff Blum, reinstated in McDonald's place, was recovering from since Spring Training. In 12 rehab games at Triple-A Reno, he hit .237 (9-for-38) with 3 doubles, a homer, and 8 RBI.
McDonald was pulled from Saturday's lineup with tightness in his back. McDonald was hitting .267 avg / .308 obp / .796 ops. He was splitting time with Willie Bloomquist at shortstop. With Stephen Drew now off of the DL himself, Blum provides an extra third baseman, something the team had been missing since Josh Bell was optioned to Reno, in order to make roster-room for Drew's return.
In other injury news, Daniel Hudson will have Tommy John surgery on Monday, July 9th. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Anaheim, CA. He'll likely not return until the second half of 2013 at the earliest.
