Facing Carpenter isn't quite the same terrifying ordeal it might have been a couple of years ago, when he went 17-4 with a 2.24 ERA. While credible enough, his current ERA would, if sustained the rest of the way, be his worst for a meaningful number of innings since 2002. Walks and strikeouts are round about the same, he's just giving up a good chunk more hits. Opponents are batting twenty points above league average off Carpenter this year: his BABIP at .315 is slightly high, but that doesn't seem enough.Still probably not going to be easy though for Arizona.

They do have Timmeh starting, though he has a losing record this year, mostly thanks to the feeble nature of the SF offense. Mind you, given the Padres and Dodgers have managed a combined total of one hit over the front 16 innings this afternoon...
