Gameday Thread, #33: 5/10 vs. Dodgers

Chad Billingsley
RHP, 2-2, 5.06

Rodrigo Lopez
RHP, 1-1, 4.14

The battle for the cellar in the NL West comes to Phoenix this evening, with the arrival of the Dodgers, who leaped above the Diamondbacks, thanks to their avoidance of the sweep against the Rockies. And yet, there's only 5.5 games between first and last place in the West: there's no division with a smaller spread going into today's games, but Arizona can ill-afford to fall behind much further.

  1. Kelly Johnson 2B
  2. Justin Upton RF
  3. Adam LaRoche 1B
  4. Mark Reynolds 3B
  5. Stephen Drew SS
  6. Chris Young CF
  7. Cole Gillespie LF
  8. Chris Snyder C
  9. Rodrigo Lopez RHP

Curious to see Conor Jackson benched, only a couple of games after he came back off the DL. Admittedly, his numbers aren't all that good against Billingsley - 5-for-27 lifetime, but if rookie Gillespie doesn't get at least one hit, that strategy will have backfired. There are some good numbers for the rest of the team, with Reynolds, LaRoche and Drew all enjoying an OPS of above .900, though Snyder's 2-for-17 makes CoJack's line look robust.

Still, the Dodgers have been far from what was expected this season, and the back end of their rotation is a major problem, with Kuroda (Wednesday) and Kershaw (whom we will miss) the only reliable entities. Winning tonight would take us out of the cellar, and we should really look to be taking two out of three. If the offense wakes up, and the bullpen doesn't spontaneously combust, it's quite possible.
