AZ SnakePit Fantasy Baseball: The Finals

New, comments

AZ SnakePit Fantasy Baseball draws to a close, with the final slate of games in both championship and consolation brackets. The former saw two games decided by narrow margins, while the latter saw a couple of blowouts. Here are the quick results. After the jump, the details and the final standings.

Championship Game: The Fighting Amish 5, Moving on Uptons 4
3rd/4th Place: AZ SnakePit 4, Sofa King Juiced 5
Consolation Game: Blonde Streaks 9, Confederate Generals 1
9th/10th Place: Funny Team Name 9, Shoryukens! 1

Championship Game: The Fighting Amish 5, Moving on Uptons 4
Uptons came agonizingly close. Two more hits in the week, one extra RBI or a save would have been enough to tie things up, and they'd have won the title on the tiebreaker, having the better ERA. But it was not to be. While Uptons dominated pitching, behind Halladay's complete-game shutout, Amish stole K's - Blackburn's 10 strikeouts proved crucial, despite the ten earned runs he also allowed. At the plate, both teams struggled, with no-one homering more than once, and scoring only 38 runs combined. But Amish got six RBI from A-Rod and five Runs by Aviles, countering the five RBI from Phillips, and it was just enough.

3rd/4th Place: AZ SnakePit 4, Sofa King Juiced 5
The battle for third-place also went to the wire: HR ended tied at six, and that allowed Sofa to claim the final spot on the podium this season. They had a 0.90 WHIP, with two wins for Haren and 11 K's by Lincecum the stand-out performances, while Bautista had two HR and six RBI. For Snake, Uggla matched that number, while Soriano also homered twice, Axford notched a pair of saves, and they hit .321 in the final round.

Consolation Game: Blonde Streaks 9, Confederate Generals 1
Blonde were in 13th and in danger of relegation barely a month ago, but surged through the final rounds, going 28-7-5 in their last four contests to finish seventh overall. They swept pitching, piling up seven wins (two, plus 11 K's, for Sanchez) with Wilson notching three Saves. Stanton's seven RBI led their offense, and Generals could only take Runs - Lackey had a Win and 15 strikeouts for them.

9th/10th Place: Funny Team Name 9, Shoryukens! 1
Funny got two Wins and ten strikeouts from Zambrano, helping them to take all the pitching categories. Marmol also notched four saves for them. The hitting was not much less one-sides, though Shoryu pipped them for SB. Matt Kemp (Funny) was the last Player of the Week, delivering five Home-Runs and a dozen RBI, to help Funny cruise to victory, ending their season on a high note.

Thanks to all the participants, and congratulations to Amish, who finally won it all, and have finished in the top five each of the five years we've done this. The leading dozen, along with the two who finished top in Division 1-A [whoever they might be!] are guaranteed spots in Division One for the 2011 season. Unless we get a compelling justification, I think we'll probably be heading back to Yahoo! for that, but we'll see. Expect more news on that around the start of spring training.
