AZ Snakepit Fantasy Baseball, Week 1

The first week of AZ SnakePit Fantasy Baseball got under way, with a couple of teams struggling to come to terms with the subtleties of lineup construction in a head-to-head league with weekly setup. Still, at least we didn't have a repeat of last year, where one manager succeeded in benching his entire team! Here's a quick look at the results from the first week, and the standings so far.

AZ SnakePit 3, dbacktom 7 dbacktom used strong pitching to win their opening game, posting a staff ERA of 1.80. John Lackey had two wins and 11 K's for them. Batting was a tougher struggle, with SnakePit winning RBI's and HR, Geoff Jenkins leading them with 2 HR and 6 RBI.

The Fighting Amish 6, Kapsaicin Kids 3 Amish surged to an early lead, taking the first three categories, and held on for victory. Mike Jacobs' 8 runs and two homers proved pivotal, and Aaron Harang posted a pair of wins and 11 Ks. Nathan had 3 saves and a zero ERA for the Kids.

4 K's 4 Gonzo 3, warlords 7 Vlad Guerrero starred for the Warlords, with three HR, 10 RBI and a .440 average. SBs was the only hitting category to go 4 K's way, though they took both ERA and WHIP, with Roy Oswalt's 0.72 ERA enough to give them the edge.

Crazy VIII's 5, Shenanigans 3 Crazy VIII's all but swept hitting, a tie in stolen bases being Shenanigans only score. However, they fought back in pitching, Chris Capuano's 10 K's helping them to three wins there. Willis had two wins for Crazy, and A-Rod drove in 11 runs.

Eric Byrnes Sucks 4, the don quixotes 6 This went right to the wire, with don needing to take WHIP to seal victory. With a miniscule 0.83 for the week, they did so: 1st-round pick Hernandez had 12 K's and a 0.63 WHIP. Ryan Freel's NL leading 4 SBs help Eric take that category.

BBTNG 8, Douchebaggery 2 BBTNG swept hitting, and it wasn't until saves that Douche got on the board, Papelbon's pair proving decisive. They also took K's, but BBTNG had five different pitchers notch wins, and Dunn starred at the plate, with 3 HR and 2 SB. Mora also had 7 RBI.

Tucson Myth 5, Chupacabras 5 A tense contest resulted in a tie, with the two sides unable to be split. Myth had the hitting edge, Willingham's 7 RBI leading the way, but Chupa came right back on the mound, behind Santana's 2 wins and 15 K's. Snell also had 11 K's for them.

7-2 Offsuiters 5, Desert Dingleberries 5 This also ended even, though Desert needed a serious comeback to do so, taking four of the five pitching categories. Scott Olsen's two wins were crucial to counter 7-2's hitting edge (Ramirex hit .440); the teams combined for only four homers.

CoJack Forever 4, GregSchulteOverdrive 6 CoJack mounted a comeback, after getting swept in hitting - Beltran drove in seven for Greg. They fell just short: Shields' single save for Greg was decisive, as CoJack managed no saves at all, despite piling up 53 strikeouts.

Baked 6, Webby17 2 Baked hit .309, with Cabrera's .500 and 8 RBI leading them to domination at the plate. Webby's pitching was decimated by injury, losing three starters to the DL and mustering only 6 K's as a result, but Dempster's saves gave them that category.
