With Micah Owings on the DL, we have rolled the dice and come up with Yusmeiro Petit as the starter for today. Who? He was the player acquired from the Marlins in exchange for Jorge Julio. How brilliant does that trade look now, with Julio utterly ineffective and now on the DL? Well, I guess we'll get a first taste this afternoon: Petit was quite impressive in the late exhibition game he started, against what was basically a full-strength Padres lineup. We'll see how he does in a contest that counts.
However, probably of more interest will be the performance - or lack thereof - of our offense. As yesterday showed, a near-perfect start can be derailed when your team-mates provide you with precisely zero run-support. There are other players on the roster apart from Orlando Hudson and Eric Byrnes, not that you'd really know it by looking at the box-scores. Whatever ails them, whether it's just "bad luck", as hitting coach Seitzer appears to believe, or something more fundamental, will doom this team until it gets resolved.
