It seems like a never-ending line of ace pitchers has been turning up at Chase Field on this homestand. Oswalt, Clemens, Pettitte and, tonight, Jason Schmidt. Phew. And we remain in a state of Webblessness, with Enrique Gonzalez going tonight, on three days rest. I imagine the bullpen (not least, new resident Bajenaru) will be getting ready for action pretty early. The Giants, however, have not exactly set the world on fire since the All-Star break, and the win yesterday was just their second in the past thirteen games, a spell which has seen them sink to the bottom of the NL West. I think we know what that feels like...
Of course, the big news is the acquisition of Livan Hernandez from the Nationals, which is already been discussed in depth over in the diary section. Opinion on that one does seem radically split. There's no doubt that we need starting pitching in the worst possible way, but I don't think El Manati Peque?o's little [BaseballReference.com lists them both at 6'2", 220 lbs.] younger brother would have been very high on most people's "must have" lists. I really would have hope we could have improved our rotation without trading away two pitching prospects. Overall, I am doubtful this will succeed short-term, and it could turn out to be horrible, long-term.
