Anyone out there really expect to win this one? Put your hand down, suitsme. :-) Any Diamondback fans? Thought not. For, let's just compare lines for today's starting pitchers over the month of August so far, shall we?
E.Gonzalez: 0-3, 22.1 IP, 25 H, 12 BB, 14 ER, 5.64 ERA
J.Schmidt: 3-0, 28.0 IP, 20 H, 9 BB, 7 ER, 2.25 ERA
Is any part of this unclear?
If so, I should mention that the last time we hung a loss on Jason Schmidt was September 5th, 2002. That day, the D'backs starting lineup included Spivey, Durazo, Williams and Miller, and we scored four unearned runs in the eighth, on our way to an 8-5 victory. Since then, Schmidt is 11-0 in fifteen starts against the D'backs with a 2.61 ERA. He's beaten us three times every year...and he's 2-0 this season so far. I'll repeat my question: anyone out there really expect to win this one?
Optimism? It's vastly over-rated. :-) At least this way, if we win, it will be a pleasant surprise; if we lose, I get to say, "I told you so." But if EnGon can throw quality strikes, something he's had problems doing of late, then that will be a big step forward, and hopefully will help us stay in the game. However, we need our offense to step up and start scoring more runs. Here are the OPS figures for our regulars - including the newly-departed - during the month of August so far:
- Drew: .900
- Jackson: .848
- Hudson: .802
- Gonzalez: .735
- Estrada: .703
- Tracy: .692
- Byrnes: .673
- Green: .583 (see ya!)
